Getting banned for calling someone a pussy in a clip on YouTube while actively being called the n-word by someone who likely didn't get banned... In fairness, I'd be pretty ticked off too.

That's inconsistent... but also, proof that making your content more visible by uploading to YouTube makes it more visible, including to the devs.

I never got how people enjoyed watching a guy just be an asshole and nothing really new against unwilling participants.  At least Gallagher was only smashing watermelons over and over on willing audience members. It might have gotten old but he wasn't an asshole.

Gallagher's 'Mexican' Show

Quotes from various Gallagher shows:

People naming their girl-children Sam and Toni instead of acceptable names like Evelyn and Betty: "Just give her some little lesbian tendencies!"
Guantánamo Bay: "We weren't even allowed to torture all the way. We had to half-torture-that's nothin' compared to what Saddam and his two sons OOFAY and GOOFAY did."
Lesbians: "There's two types-the ugly ones and the pretty ones." Obama: "If Obama was really black, he'd act like a black guy and get a white wife."
Michael Vick: "Poor Michael Vick."
Women's lib: "These women told you they wanna be equal-they DON'T."
Trans people: "People like Cher's daughter-figure that out. She wants a penis, but she has a big belly. If you can't see your dick, you don't get one."
The Rice Krispies elves: "All three of those guys are gay. Look at 'em!"
Mexicans (again): "Look around-see any Mexicans? Nope. They'll be here later for the cleanup."

FTFA: ...the suspension was apparently for calling one or more players a "pussy". An insulting term and a misogynistic one at that, though it also feels like a harsh thing to be banned for, though it is against Call of Duty's new code of conduct which explicitly targets "derogatory comments based on [...] gender identity".

I have no idea how some people are able to survive on the rare occasions that they must physically enter the real world, a sentiment which applies to a fair portion on here. Not everything that has ever happened has to have various tags applied to it.

Are used to play a lot of call of duty and some of the people on there are really disgusting.

I was always the "kill them with kindness" type of person, and sometimes they would respond with "it's call of duty, it's part of the game" so they were honestly acting like that, saying the misogynistic, racist, homophobic, antisemitic things because they just thought "you were supposed to"

I would always say "no, it's not part of the game, be better" and of course they would tear into me more. None of it bothered me personally, it was just sad that it happens at all.

I don't think you understand what "kill them with kindness" means. It's from The Taming of the Shrew, and means abusing someone all the while pretending you're doing it for their own benefit. It's a form of gaslighting.

OK, OK, all I meant was when they would say horrible things to me I would be overly nice to them, and even though I know it was a pointless gesture. I would constantly tell them why what they were saying was wrong.
Every once in a while, you get a kid that would say "you're right, I was just doing it because that's what you do" but mostly they just said something worse to me

I would also suggest that the meaning of the saying has changed over the years and doesn't reference the source material anymore.

That the absurdity of attaching ridiculous tags to seemingly anything and everything is not recognized by one who says with a straight face that college football is "the last form of legal slavery" has been noted.

If an individual is referred to as a "dick," the only person who is going to immediately think it has anything to do with misandry and/or gender identification is one who has spent far too much time doing things other than having interactions with those in the real world.

In other words: "Suck it up, buttercup". Please.

It doesn't matter if the interaction was online or off, nobody should be forced to tolerate being around assholes if they don't want to just because 'the real world' is full of jerks. No, you shut that down. You can argue spirit of the law vs letter of the law all day long, but the bottom line is that this asshole has to sit in the corner for a week and when he comes back he'll either think twice before opening his gob again or he won't and he'll work himself up into a permanent ban. There's no downside.

Well, COD isn't a workplace, for one. You could say this stuff at a grocery store too, in fact I've seen it done, all that is going to happen is people think you are an asshole. It's not illegal to swear at people.

I normally hate Dr. Disrespect, for a lot of reasons. But I think he's right to push back here. Proximity chat in COD is something that can be turned off (I have it on for tactical reasons) for one (all chat can be disabled). This is nothing worse than you would hear being said during sports/competition, and that's what this is.

Not illegal, but your grocery store also may kick you out or ban you for asshole conduct. Plus in the real world people don't tend to do this because talk shiat, get hit, is a greater risk in the physical world than in online trash talking. Regardless both are businesses which can refuse service.

And I mean, in this case, it is Dr. Disrespect's workplace essentially. Only his business model is reliant on using other platforms, such as Activision and Twitch, for which he agrees to abide by the rules they set. And unlike other players his conduct is much more visible.

It may be his business, but other players aren't his employees. Huge difference.

As to the rules, he doesn't stream on Twitch, hasn't for awhile. His conduct might be more visible, but as demonstrated on his own stream the rules need to apply the same to everyone and clearly don't.

He's not going to be aware if that person gets a ban or not later, him anecdotally running into another player also violating the policies doesn't mean he gets to, and frankly 'it's not fair someone else did it too' is weak.

As you can see, he's wealthy enough to just create another account, an option not necessarily as easily optioned by others. It doesn't slow him down at all, or punish him at all. Thus there is no point to the action at all. Essentially he was fined the cost of the game, and he makes that in minutes on his streams.

I've heard lots of kids / adults rant on proximity chat after they get killed. It's actually why I have it on, because I find it amusing to hear, well, that and a team using in game chat can be overheard on the map with proximity on.

Regardless (and without going into how the "people talk smack all the time" is exactly why multiplayer is a cesspool that I avoid) the terms are terms. You have a problem with that? Take the company to court and have it out in court, or just don't play their game. It is very simple.

I do play the game and don't do this, but I hear it a whole lot - especially the n word.

As to not playing multiplayer lol, no. I play with my friends for at least an hour a night and wouldn't trade it for anything.

I always thought this Penny Arcade editorial about his suspension three years ago was tragically spot-on. Sad to learn he's still doing the thing where you take in oxygen and your heart keeps working.

So if DrDisrespect repeatedly livestreams people in the bathroom at E3, over and over again, and eventually they get around to putting him on time-out, it's good that they did that. Because what he did was farking weird, and gross, in ways that may project into the legal sphere. But when I saw a kid in there, a kid of maybe ten farking livestreamed from a urinal, this all ceased to be a novel intellectual exercise and instead become something more like an icicle pushed slowly through my left eye.

I have suggested before that your politics consist of those things which you consider outside the realm of politics. I will never write about what occurred to me when I saw that, as a man and a father, burning in the knowledge that what he did doesn't matter at all.

It doesn't matter at all. Because we toil and writhe in the dumbest age yet, it's possible that someone might think I'm saying it's not important. I'm not saying that, though. What I'm saying is that it materially, observably doesn't matter insofar as he'll be back on bigger than ever, sooner than you think, his bad boy credentials only burnished by his stint in detention. By his nominal exile. By what is functionally a vacation. What our masters feel for us can't even be called contempt, because that would imply conscious recognition. What we are is a number lower than another number, his number, and therefore somewhere below the human threshold.

Arguably, they have significantly more control in many respects.

They have full content control. Nearly full creative freedom. They can even choose their own profit vs rules slider (ad revenue has a big say over how much and how hard you can swear, for instance). But that's up to you, not your boss. You have nearly complete control over your own hours, your own attire, your content, etc.

The trade-off for all that freedom, is you are beholden to the algorithm for your success. That and the whims of the masses.

Quantumbunny: Arguably, they have significantly more control in many respects.

Re-read your last paragraph. Successful YouTubers have to commit to image and content that pleases their audience and platform, and must produce on a regular basis to appease the algorithm. They don't have the freedom to do whatever they like if they want to remain profitable. It's an easier job than some and the rewards can be greater, but it's not without pressure or outside control. They're only completely free if they're not depending on their channel for their livelihood and just do it for fun.

You mean like anyone else who works?

Most employers expect 40 or more hours a week, and hitting certain deliverables.

YouTube is a sliding scale. You only need to work as hard as what kind of content you produce and how much you want to make. Unlike traditional employers where hard work caps your profits.

I'm not claiming it's easier or harder, but you only need to hit the grind constantly to a certain point, where you then coast off the viewership and subscribers. At which point you are still beholden to the rules of order imposed by the company giving you money. They're code if conduct is significantly more lax than most traditional employers.

ModernLuddite: This idiot has to appease the COD people because his entire career is just someone else's thing. (And I have no doubt that he's working for/with them to generate free advertisement for everyone with fake controversy.)

He's worth $6 million because of the "work" he does.
