Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won't tell us why

I have an idea.

Apple: We are discussing removing your app because you are a terrible person and you are the root cause of every single woe and issue befalling your dumbass decision to purchase this social media site. You stoke hate and allow toxicity to infest the platform you bought, meaning you are personally responsible for this. You stupidly think polls, on the platform you claimed had millions of bots, are valid, and therefore allow trash and no advertiser wants to be on that and we don't want to be a party to allowing access. In summary: IT'S YOU!

It must be a cold day in hell when I am siding with Apple in anything.

Ol' Musky is just a horrible shiat human being and I am glad he's showing that he is a failure it helps to remind people that he didn't start Texla or PayPal and bought his way in and made them call him a "founder".

Just wait until he finds out about the "secret tax" called "markup" that all retailers put on the products they sell in their stores. If you want a place on Walmart's shelves, you have to pay them their vig, so there's no reason Apple should be forced to be a charity.

The thing that Apple brings to the table to earn 30% for someone like Twitter is vastly reducing friction to purchase a subscription service like he is offering. You can sign up via Apple Pay with one click, plus it is also really easy to unsubscribe through Apple rather than having to deal with a Byzantine customer service system that the provider may have when you want to unsubscribe. Another advantage is that my actual credit card number isn't sent via Apple Pay so I have protection against data breaches (which Twitter has had).

If Elon decided to bypass Apple on Twitter Blue subscriptions I think the reduced subscription revenue would be way more than the "Apple tax" he's complaining about. There's a lot of people who just bail on signing up for a subscription the moment they have to fish a credit card out of their wallet instead of using a friction-feee system like Apple Pay.

Apps are typically easier. If an app isn't easier than using mobile safari, it won't survive. Hell if it weren't for the Fark app, I'd rarely be on here.

What I'm curious about is why the other big players don't start their own Twitter. The code isn't some proprietary secret, and you could integrate it into a lot of existing ecosystems. Offer an ad-free service with verification options and some basic content moderation if you do a subscription. And if you really wanted to be spicy, pre-emptively ban Elon from using it.

Axeofjudgement: When was this ever secret?

It's a secret because Elon has never had to collect revenue on an app before and he's never had to concern himself with the day to day money stuff applied to the plebian class. He's completed disconnected.

The macroeconomics of the service industry microtransactions just wouldn't have been a thing that he will have ever had to think about. He sells a $70,000 car with a free app. Or he sells a billion dollar rocket.

If he buys an app on his phone, he just presses the button and probably doesn't even look at the price.

It's been a month since Elon closed on Twitter, and only about that long since it became obvious he was determined to slam it into the ground. It's possible, even probable, that the other big players are scrambling to snap up ex-twitter employees and launch their own versions but are being quiet about it.

And now Tim Cook's schlong is smacking him right in the cheek because there's a whole monetary world he just didn't know existed and he's suddenly subject to it and he is not happy about being subject to the control of middlemen.

2022-11-28 9:50:12 PM
It would take over 52 million people signing up for Twitter Blue ($8/month x 12) to match the $5 billion in ad revenue earned by Twitter in 2021. That's not taking into account a 30% app store cut.

Hulu has fewer subscribers than that, and charges the same with ads. Whomever's been giving Elmo advice is really bad at math.

Yeah, geez... what is Elmo, like 100?  Old enough to miss the Fortnite/Apple fight over the 30% approximately one pandemic eternity ago.

Or maybe it only feels like an eternity because of L. Ron Musk's bizarre efforts to make it worse by flogging his minions back into the factories?
