I worked in the Savings and Loan industry in the mid-late 80s. This went on weekly if not daily. I was in my 20s then and had a ball.

The world is VERY different today.

As someone pointed out, this is the first complaint, so I have to wonder how accurate that is. Guy could just be a super-prude, which is totes fine with me. But some companies really have a focus on having people who work together, so someone bringing down the whole vibe of the office is gonna be in a tricky situation.

Who knows? I know that I could avoid alcoholism and promiscuity if it bugged me that much.

It is brain washing.  Underpay and treat your employees like Shiat and get them to do Group cheers to make them feel better with little or no cost to the company.  Kind of like Pizza parties, but you get the cheapest pizza only 2 slices per employee and make sure it is cold by the time you have your lunch break.  Then they act insulted when you complain "Fine, last time i am going to do anything nice for you guys!"

There's also a weird cult of Sam Walton happening in there. He was all over the magazines and training materials even though he'd been dead for like 15 years by the time I started working there. I'm pretty sure they were trying to reinforce the idea that we were working for a kindly old man and not a soulless corporate abomination.

According to the Court of Cassation, the company's "fun" values included regular obligatory social events that culminated in "excessive alcoholism encouraged by colleagues who made very large quantities of alcohol available," as well as "practices pushed by colleagues involving promiscuity, bullying and incitement to various excesses."

So much this. If people want to go out and have a good time whatever, let them go. I've worked with plenty of people who really enjoy going out and drinking with colleagues

I've tagged along from time to time, but I don't drink. People trying to force me to drink has always seemed incredibly inconsiderate and ridiculous to me. By the time I'm hitting my late 30s or 40s, I'm not going to start drinking because somebody at a bar at some work event start saying they think it would be fun if I did

Just let people be and have their fun of their own way

Sounds like a local right wing coffee company. They had a recent case with a guy who worked for them, and they would more or less force him to go out to strip clubs and stuff, under threat of losing his job. They have a couple of completely inappropriate videos out there, one is some joke about a "sausage party", and the dude got pressured into that on his like 3rd day. Being Utah, he was not a fan, but they didn't care.

I can'[t remember the outcome of the case, but it wasn't looking good for the coffee company.

Yeah, those people have obviously never known a recovering alcoholic. I worked with a couple, and they'd even go out to the bars occasionally, but basically you ask if they want a drink, they tell you that they don't drink, and you respect that. While I enjoy alcoholic beverages, it's not required that everyone else joins me. At the most, if someone doesn't drink, I ask about it out of curiosity. Some people have issues processing alcohol, some are religious, some are ex-alcoholics. Some just don't like alcohol. That's fine by me. But the pressure shouldn't be anything more than "Hey, you want a beer?".

Lots of workplaces are more about the social aspect and how well you "fit in" with the group in that way, than how well you do your job.
That's not how it should be, but it's how it is.
Those places usually do not last, and people end up losing their jobs one way or another.

But, even where your skills matter more, it still matters how much people (or at least the people in charge) like you.
Sometimes it's just a matter of the wrong one person disliking you for personal reasons, and they will either get rid of you or make your working life miserable.

I never liked to taste, but more so its that I grew up in a place where it excessive drinking was really common, and often Led to bad to have you. Exemplified by the kind of people I really disliked, so for a lot of reasons I never drank. The idea that I'm going to start in my mid thirties because somebody vaguely pressured me to do so it's just idiotic

I also find it annoying when people say things like " oh I really respect that" as if it was some Grand moral choice. It never was, I was just never really interested or felt like I needed it

My favorite response was in my early twenties, I was out at a bar waiting for a band to play in the guitarist came and sat down with me and started chatting cuz I used to go to all their shows and was usually the first person to get up and start dancing. They were a ska band, so a good crowd skanking along was pretty good

When I told him I didn't drink or two drugs, he said "why not, drinking fun, drugs are fun." I appreciate it that honest answer. He had a point. But we makes our choices.

If only we could harness the power of these people. Someone should come up with a LinkedIn equivalent for them. Employers that prefer dickish employees could recruit there. TSA security cops, complaint desk clerks, DMV employees, toll booth attendants. Lots of places we could put these people to work.
