You're trying to say that '70s music was better than '80s music? Blasphemy!

Prince
Dire Straits
The Police
U2
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Springsteen -- Born in the USA
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Depeche Mode
And so on and so on.

Yeah all of the 80s sucked. There was more that hair metal and Madonna, even some main stream pop like Duran Duran and others had good musicians.

(I left off Micheal Jackson because of his problems)

Ok I'll bite. What decade had better music? Difficulty: if it is also the decade in which you became sexually active and began the journey towards independence and adulthood, your opinion in irrevocably biased.

Fwiw it's worth good music has been coming out forever. Bad music too. The 80's were about arena shows, the 90s were about festivals.

Ironically, the festival, despite it's message of counterculture and so on, was more profitable than the arena show. You can sell all kinds of overpriced shiat to an multi day captive audience.

Also, the worst music of the '70s was MUCH WORSE than the worst music of the '80s, so that should work into it somehow.

Decent list.  I would add the General or Festival Seating at the Cincinnati concert of The Who in 1979.

They even had an episode about it on WKRP.

Of course, there's nothing to say things would have progressed the way they did.  Their stuff at that point was rather mediocre.  Once they had a hit, though, it's a case of success breeds success.

Well that was a fair bit better than most lists that make it to Fark.  I can imagine some folks might shift a few items around on the list and maybe even do a little dropping and replacing but i can't see that it needs as much changes as your typical list of things that meet a certain criteria  on the internet

Prince  - Signed with WB in 1978.

Dire Straits  - Forrmed in 1977

The Police - First #1 album in 1979

U2  -  Formed 1976.  Boy came out in 1980, so maybe a technically correct.

Iron Maiden - Formed in 1975.  Signed with EMI in 1979.

Metallica - You got one!

Springsteen -- Born in the USA After an already decades long career.  Dude has been around since the '60s

Stevie Ray Vaughan - See Springsteen.  Double Trouble formed in 1978.

Depeche Mode - Is farking horrible and perfectly emblematic of the era.

And so on and so on.

Precisely.  Anyone that was good in the '80s was already good in the 70s.   And so on and so on.

Ticketmaster introduces "dynamic" pricing system

Yeah, this is definitely bullshiat. Concert tickets should be set in price by the seller at least. I understand that resold tix get marked up, but this is bullshiat everywhere they try this "surge pricing" bullshiat.

Prince changes his name to an unpronounceable glyph
Yeah, really stupid move, I remember this one, not just because it involves music, but because my roommate at the time was a HUGE Prince fan.

Van Halen hire the guy from Extreme to be their new singer
Yup. Stupid move, I knew that this would go over like a lead balloon the moment I heard it. Another friend of mine liked Extreme (They're actually a pretty decent band), so he was excited, but he at least saw where this might go south.

Dee Dee Ramone quits the Ramones and makes a rap album
I don't even know what to say here. I looked up Dee Dee King, it's horrible...

Mötley Crüe fire Vince Neil and make an industrial album
Mötley Crüe did just fine. Their last straw for me was the whole "We're retiring and signing a binding legal contract that this is really our last tour" bullshiat. They can look at that time like a nice little vacation, living off of royalties.

The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton make a film version of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'
Sorry, I get a HUGE kick out of this movie. It's corny and cheesy, but fun. I think I have a special bond with this though, because I remember being a kid at the State Fair one year when this movie came out. They were also showcasing projection TVs and Laser Discs at the time, so they had a truck driving around with the movie playing on a loop[p all day. II loved the fair, and my childhood was an absolute nightmare, so I associated a good memory with the movie as well. But I get a kick, I don't think everything needs to be Oscar-worthy, and I like the performances. :-)

Metallica takes on own fans over Napster
Yup, this made it into my Modern Media Concepts class, I did my final paper on it. They lost me for-farking-ever, especially since the Garage Days album actually has farking Lars bragging about going over to Kirk's house after school and copying his farking albums. Goddamn hypocritical midget.

The Beatles: "We're bigger than Jesus"
Yeah, not the best thing to say. Didn't seem like THAT big of a deal, once you understood the context of the statement, but it was enough that it was apparently part of Mark David Chapman's reason for shooting Lennon.

U2 give their new album away for free in iTunes
Yeah, this doesn't seem like that big of a deal until you find out that you can't farking REMOVE the album. There are a million ways they could have done that one better.

Woodstock Organizers celebrate event's 30th anniversary with a horrific riot
Yeah, I missed the 25 year one, which is bad, because it's the year I was born. I should have gone, but I had no idea how to get there. Turns out, there were people all over who were willing to give someone a loft. Anyway, there was a lot of doom and gloom about the 25 year one, and it turned out perfect, even had the vibe where they gave up and just let everyone in, rain, camping, all of the fun of the first one. So yeah, I understand why they did they third one, but they forgot what made the other two work.

The Rolling Stones hire the Hells Angels as security guards for their rock festival
Yup, a bad way to cap off a bad year for the peace and love movement. This isn't just a bad musical decision, this is a legendarily bad decision all around.

On the one hand, this is Rolling Stone, so yeah, Rock and Pop is their focus.  In other news, Nashville calls itself Music City and the finals of baseball in America is called The World Series.

On the other hand, Rolling Stone followed their story pretty closely and has mentioned it over the years.

Yeah, that one could have replaced a couple, pretty easily. That simple statement pretty much cratered their careers. I know they're back, but I haven't heard anything big from, them since that happened. Yet Ted farking Nugent says FAR more heinous stuff, and is a darling of the same farking demographic. WTF?

Marcos P: Prince changed his name to get out of a bullshiat contract. Seemed like a smart idea...

Someone DNRTFA: Warner Bros. wound up sending thousands of computer discs containing the symbol to media outlets so they could print his new name. They also referred to him as "the Artist Formerly Known as Prince." The whole gambit confused his fans and did little to help with his flagging record sales.

This went on for 3 years, he didn't get out of the contract in ANY way, and it pissed off and confused fans. It was stupid, and we all saw it when it happened. It wasn't smart, he came out with LESS fan support, rather than more.

Prince was warring against his label. The name change put that news out there in a way a lot of other efforts would not have. Fighting with your label may be a bad idea, but he wanted to make a splash, and he did. He lost some momentum in the industry, but it isn't like he ended up in front of a dish tank to pay rent.

Signing REM seems like an odd pick for worst choices. Based on previous performance, it made sense. Not having a crystal ball is not a fault.

I'm not sure Clapton's vaccination opinion had much impact. He was an oldies act by then. Coked up on stage rantings about immigrants and people of color (when his career was based on being the Pat Boone of the blues) seems like a bigger folly.

The Beatles suffered from slanted reporting. Their entire career up to that point had benefitted from the media. They thought they controlled fire, but they had it backwards.

The Stones thought they could make themselves even bigger than their music. I think maybe the US festival came close to replicating Woodstock's success, but at a much lower level and impact. Woodstock was a fluke. Good people and good will saved what could have been and in the early days seemed like it was a fiasco. If not for the movie which reflected the best parts of the experience, we'd be looking back on it differently. There was only one more death at the Altamont Speedway (4) than there was at OG Woodstock (3), and Woodstock 99 is reported to also have 3 fatalities.

Elvis' life wasn't great at the end, but he didn't have to work with Barbara, so it could have been worse.

Rolling Stones magazine's choices to alienate their existing market and try to appeal to newer generations who were already getting their information from other resources seems like it would be worthy of the list. I was a subscriber for a long time, but their reporting became a series of attempts to recreate Gonzo and they were pushing bands who were already over by the time the issue came to print. Once they joined the same publishing company that publishes US magazine and using the same content, I couldn't cancel fast enough.
