Florida Man, Florida Man, kills you dead. Eats your face off then drinks whatever's nearby. Can he swing, from a web? No he can't, because he nearly died from ingesting chemicals. Lookout, here comes Florida Man.

Still should've gotten life in prison. The insanity defense is B.S., and results in all-too-many worthless murderers being release after they're "cured."

He'll never be safe in open society.

"You can't even look at me?" she asked Harrouff, who was sitting at the defense table, wearing a red and white striped prison uniform and glasses.

Wait a minute, round horn-rimmed glasses, blue pants, scruffy red puff-ball cap? That's not him, that's Waldo!

Yeah, I don't think insanity defense is as good as a thing you think. Regular sentencing he might have eventually gotten out on a parole or pardon. At the very least they would be allowed to be in the general population at the prison and have some freedoms. He's going to be a room by himself, medicated, and generally only out to talk to medical professionals or very controlled activities with other crazy people. Oh, and there is never a release by date.

It sounds all kind of awful to me. I might want to do regular prison instead. At least maybe I can help raise puppies for service animals.

I know this is a shock, being Florida and all, but there have been several face eaters in recent years. This kid had only a little alcohol and a little cannabis in his system, but not enough of either to affect his behavior drastically. It seems to be a genuine case of bat shiat crazy. I've followed this case, and his google search history is full of him trying to figure out why his head has become a very strange place of late, and what he should do about it. There is more that a little deliberate ignorance on his family's part as well. For example, his father, knowing the kid had been acting very bizarrely, took him to a gun show, where he purchased the murder weapon, a large knife. His mother, after he stood in her kitchen having a break with reality and chugging cooking oil, dropped him off to his dad at the restaurant and didn't say anything to anyone. And when he stormed out of the restaurant, acting all crazy, no one thought they might want to follow him. I'm not blaming them for his crazy, but they were ostriching the problem quite a bit.

Right... THIS kid.... was like some buff highschooler dude.... These poor folks were just, chilling, sitting in their lawn chairs in their garage, drinking  (sounds like fun), and this kid entered.

He was growling and whatnot... must've been horrible to see your spouse die like this, then die too.

This happened literally less than two miles from my house. Kid walked like 3 miles from a different direction and just randomly attacked two people hanging out in their garage.

My old neighbor was friends with the people he attacked. Just a whacked-out story all the way around.

what's BS is Judges declaring who is or is not qualified for insanity defense. Judges are not qualified. A good portion of people in prisons should be in mental health wards.

Give the parents a life sentence also.  Either they pay for their defective spawn's permanent stay or the defective is exiled to point Nemo.

The defective will always be a drain on the collective.  At best the defective can be made into food for other killers that are also a drain on the collective.  Although they should be consumed by prisoners also, or exiled to point Nemo.

Also the judge needs to make sure the parents know they are at fault for their defective spawn.  That their line is tainted and their lineage can likely never undo the shame that they created.

Acute doesn't mean it never happened before, or that it won't happen again, it just means it's transitive, and he's not in a permanent psychosis.

People can have weird psychotic breaks, then go be productive members of society. A friend of mine had a bit of a break, thought he was in FL, went for a walk in his underwear... in Colorado, in the snow.

Brains are weird, doctors aren't gonna let this guy out unless they think it's safe, and even then, it'll probably be to a monitored halfway house for the rest of his life. Vengeance and justice are different words for a reason, and it seems like a lot of people in this thread are way more concerned with one than the other.

People in here are speculating on his mental health as though they know better than the actual psychiatrists for both the defense and the prosecution, who conducted dozens of actual assessments. He'll probably end up in jail until he's elderly, then dumped on the street to die alone, because mercy and America are never gonna be synonymous.

He's in for a worse sentence than a life sentence in prison. The Law Professor quoted at the end of the article is correct - no judge is going to allow him to be released unless they're *completely* sure that he's safe. People who are given responsibility for these decisions are notoriously risk averse.

He's going to spend the rest of his life living with insane people, with doctors and nurses who have complete control over him, and who can drug him into submission if they want to. Because he's deemed to be mentally incompetent, he loses most of his rights and autonomy. All decisions about his care and welfare are given to a board of guardians and his doctors.
