Our tree topper is a dinosaur, has been for years. My sister in law hates it with a passion as it's blasphemy. I'm trying to figure out how to attach angel wings and a halo.

On with the fight!

Christmas trees are like boobs. Natural is better but I still enjoy the fake ones.

Blasphemy against what?  There's no rule it has to be an angel or a star.  The bible's silent on Christmas tree toppers.  If you tie a bow up there, would that be blasphemous too?  If anything, I would think depicting an angel trying to take an entire tree up them is worse.

Staring at my broken artificial tree is more rewarding than watching a broken artificial news channel.

I prefer natural, but we bought a nice artificial when we had our first kid 6 years ago.  We will buy natural again when my youngest is at least 6, so another 6 years from now.

Natural trees aren't dangerous if you water them every day. The problem is people don't like to water them every day.

We pulled the trigger on an artificial tree last year and I'm a convert now.

We like to put the decorations up right after Thanksgiving and keep them out well into January, so now we don't have to worry about having a half-dead, pine needle shedding shrub in our living room for 90% of that time.

Once you get all the ornaments up you can barely tell it's fake anyhow.

My sister and BIL's entire "Christmas tree" is a fake dinosaur they put a Santa hat on, hang a couple lights on, and put presents under.  Tradition can be whatever the hell you want.

I always go with the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.

It's all anyone really needs. Keep it on a table so the pets don't get to it.

Against science. Germany, where the Christmas tree originated, is home to some of the best pterosaur fossils ever found. So his choice of prehistoric reptile to top the tree is clearly in the wrong.

Haven't put up a tree in decades.  It's amazing how freaked out some people get about that, like the sun won't  rise in the morning because of it.

2022-11-28 9:45:38 AM
we used to do both. We have inherited a TON of christmas decorations and if we want to get them all out we need two tress at least

I asked the wife last week and shes fine with the fake tree so thats what we are gonna do. I dont really give a shyte and its less hassle for me so fake it is.

I used to get really in to it but more and more it feels like a chore. I still have to put lights on the house.

Both choices are fine and have their pros and cons.

I grew up with live trees and my wife and I got them until about 15 years ago. The rising annual costs to buy them, diminishing quality, issues with cats getting into the water, and needles on the floor was just getting too annoying. So we bought a $250 tree after Xmas for $80 and have used it ever since. We hang a few aroma sticks in the tree each year and the tree gets stored in the shed the other 11 months of year. It can be a hassle to get out, but going to the lot and bringing a live tree home is worse. It has been a money saver after the second year we used it and this weekend will be the 16th year we put it up. Our kids don't remember the live trees.

But everyone should do what makes them happy. There is clearly no right or wrong.

The garden's biggest dried sunflower (multiheaded, not one big flower) spends a month in the house as the xmas tree. The rest of winter it's in the deck table umbrella hole, seed heads smeared with peanut butter for the birds.

Uh-huh.

OK, Edgelord. You go on wit' yo' bad self and your permanent, unchanging decor. I'm certain your souvenir sarape on the wall and the AT-AT on the thrift store coffee table will be modish for decades.

/Small artificial at home, with a Santa hat for a tree topper. I searched high and low but couldn't find a Krampus of the right size. Charlie Brown tree on my desk at work.

Until they can make a real tree fireproof then the answer is obvious.

Nope.  I'm minimalist, because I have to do the rental shuffle every December.  No art, no decorations, no useless furniture.

We have a really nice fake tree 9ft tall and had pine cones on it and everything to look more "real" but after 6 years of taking it in and out of the box its dropping needles like a real one and half the integrated lights are burnt out and impossible to replace since they are the stupid one bulb burns out and the whole string dies.

We used to get a real one that was actually alive in a pot every year then we would plant it after xmas in my FIL yard but he has a yard full of trees now and the 4ft tall real tree just looks out of place in our house.

2022-11-28 10:42:07 AM
Used to cut a scrub cedar out of our pasture, since it was a nuisance plant anyway.  Mom got tired of the fallen needles, so went with an artificial.

Haven't had a tree in 16 years, since Mom passed.

Oh, and I have a 20+ year old Taz Angel tree topper, Mrs Baka hated it at first, now she loves it

2022-11-28 11:23:20 AM
Always had real but rather than trash heap it on January 6th (the Epiphany), we would use its branches for kindling during the rest of the winter (in the fireplace) and dry the trunk for a year or two for firewood the following year(s). That way, no waste of a tree. The fireplace now needs about $5-10K of work so we buy table top real trees (no watering needed) from Whole Foods. It sits on a coffee table right by the picture window. Can't say I miss decorating a 6 foot tree, but once the fireplace is operational, we'll go back to full size ones. MrsGriffin is a bit of a pyro and fires during the holidays makes her happy.

Yeah, and this.  I like my tree.  Takes me maybe an hour to set up, fluff and decorate.  And it makes me happy.
