Why tho?

Wasn't Russian talking heads saying Kazakhstan next after Ukraine?

They might actually have a chance if they tried Kazakhstan unlike Ukraine...  As long as they go in with what they have now.  Kazakhstan couldn't even put down unarmed protests last year.

They should have worn the traditional Kazakhstan ceremonial garb known as the mankini to prove Putin's health. That would have been very nice.

Every country in Central Asia has significant populations of the ethnic groups in neighboring nations. Soviets designed the republic borders that way to make them unstable if they ever became independent.

So while invading a Central Asia country might have been easier, in some ways, than going after Ukraine, the conflict would likely ripple out. And China has several belt and road projects in the area, as well as an important gas pipeline.

Putin looks a little bored, fondling the chair arm like a stoner.   They should have met in a Kazhak yurt.

It's that way because each ethnic group hates the other ethnic group.

Like Scotland and England.

Tokayev also has sought to reduce the influence of his Russia-friendly authoritarian predecessor Nursultan Nazarbayev, who ruled for three decades. Nazarbayev resigned in 2019, but had retained significant clout as head of the national security council until Tokayev removed him from the post this year.

Tokayev sounds like someone Putin might attempt to get removed from power if he doesn't toe the line.
