Hey, they made their decision. And not for the reason that I thought they'd do it for. Not that it affects me overly, because I don't shop at Whole Foods, because I don't need granola THAT expensive, or organic clementines as sour as lemons.

Oh noes... the lobster industry will be destroyed now.

I wonder what the profit margins were on those things.  If you're shopping at WFM and you're buying live lobster, you've got money to burn.

Well the reason why they aren't being carried is more or less being touted as the Death Knell for Maine Lobstah.

I love how business groups always complain that retailers aren't following the "science" without ever providing evidence. Retailers always giving up good revenue streams just for the fark of it or because some "<insert leftist-sounding boogeyman enviro group here>".

That is the Bro'est lobster I've ever seen.

Scientist have been telling the fishing industry in New England for decades that their practices are unsustainable and they continue to ignore all the warnings. They farked around now they're pissy that they have to find out.

Must not be enough money in it for WF.

It's a whole lobster, ain't it? And lobsters are food. Seems like a good fit for the store branding.

Think faster.   The lobster industry IS destroyed.  They're just not going to tell you yet.  Wouldn't want to upset all those innocent consumers.  The lobster fishery south of Maine is gone forever, as well as the clams now.  I just read about them last week.  Oops, we farked up! They all seem to be gone!
They've been taking massive amounts of lobster out of "Maine waters" for about 20 years, but it's starting to crash too.
Now let's ask Maine fisherpeople to give up lobster harvesting for the good of the planet. Everyone clap.

That's what they do.  They get all the technology they can, take everything they are legally allowed to take, sell it all, and go do it again next year.  Every lobster still left on the east coast probably has 4 lobster boats and 100 radars looking for it (or however they do it).   The wildlife agencies won't stop them, because this is not "harvest quotas" that fishing boats pretend to honor--this is "we have to shut down the fisheries for everything indefinitely, and even then we don't promise it will recover."  Way to be popular, Fish and Game.

Ask Canada what happened when their cod fishery crashed after a few hundred years of abuse.  They were building the  farking country with cod money.  It was endless.   And then it was gone.  It's  never come back.
We're just knocking them down like dominos.  And Noooooooobody will stop it, because THE ECONOMY

Did they, though? Of the 33 right whale deaths tracked by the NOAA, 21 of them were attributed to Canadian fisherman, and the remaining 12 were in states that aren't Maine. The last entanglement in Maine was in 2004 (that whale survived), and there hasn't been a right whale death attributed to Maine fisherman since NOAA started tracking that data.

I'm not arguing against new protections for endangered species, but it does seem like Maine specifically is being singled out for ongoing problems created by Canadians and non-Maine states.

The lobster numbers in that fist chart don't look too bad... the crab numbers though... interesting to see that it's both coasts with crab issues... obviously the water is warming.

I do not support over fishing of any species. I'm not sure that's the case for Lobsters at this point. But, I'm priced out of them at this point so i'm doing my part and did not have a lobster bake or do a bisque like i usually do...

Female lobsters spray urine out of holes below their eyes to attract males. Maybe bring pissy is just the name of the game out there.

Are lobsters known to make moves outside of their species?

"Maine" lobster was never more than a marketing scam.  'Maine' lobster belongs to the species Homarus Americanus.   This is an Atlantic species of lobster that ranges from Canada to New Jersey.  The only way tell a 'Maine' lobster from a New Jersey lobster is by how they are dressed.  The Jersey lobster is wearing a tiny little wife-beater.
