Steroids fall into the same category as CTE. Players will absolutely destroy themselves if allowed and either you think the league has a responsibility to limit the harm that will accumulate or not. If you let baseball players take steroids because it's their choice, would you allow a wide receiver or hockey goalie to not wear a helmet? MLB doesn't want the inevitable testicular cancer lawsuits filed by former players.

If it was allowed, then you'd assume they would take their advice from a physician, not Hanz and Franz at the gym.

You can't assume all players have the same access to a qualified physician. Minor league players make peanuts. Minimum salary for a AAA player is $14,700 a year. Hanz and Franz at the gym is all they can afford. For someone looking to make a big break, the pressure would be immense.
