Republicans have been stopping the IRS from doing your taxes for free for decades now.

DarnoKonrad: Republicans Politicians of both parties owned by the major tax prep companieshave been stopping the IRS from doing your taxes for free for decades now.

Let's be fair about this.

Huh. That's the same technique that Facebook has been using for several years to collect personal medical data via the "patient portal" licensed by numerous healthcare providers, including the major one in my area.

Class action lawsuits incoming?

This!

It's a long article and this is Fark, so:

Harvard's Matlock said The Markup's findings showed the almost inevitable consequences of relying on for-profit companies to handle a government requirement. It's a process that provides users little choice but to hand over their data to Facebook if they want to comply with the law, she said.
"It's frustrating because taxpayers have been pushed into the arms of these private, for-profit companies simply to comply with their tax filing obligations," she said. "We have no choice, really, in the matter."

Yay. Republicans

I've been submitting my taxes via freefile for years.

Meta wins financially too. The company says it can use the data it gleans from tools like the pixel to power its algorithms, providing it insight into the habits of users across the internet.

Gee, that information couldn't possibly be abused...

I believe what Darno was referring to is that the IRS has all of your information and all of your income and that (minus deductions they might not know about) could basically send you a file to which you just add deductions and it would be much more simple than having to input everything (or having tax software look up the info for you).

There is a simpler way to do taxes, but the big tax software companies lobby against it and we all know that $ speakers louder than helping the people

Is this via the "let us send anonymous data to partners" question that's lumped in during the last steps of filing?

You can say no, ya know...it doesn't stop the filing process...

So can we tell all those tax lobby groups preventing the IRS from doing free online filing to go pound sand yet and setup a free online IRS delivered tax service like there's been talk about now for a while? That way we can avoid all these middle people who are meta about letting personal information get out to the world.

Nay. This is a chunk of code that the website inserts that allows Meta to basically read everything the user does on the site.
