"If a Japanese tourist can't escape or hide, they're advised to "throw things close to the criminal, use them as weapons; scream; act with all your might.""

I guess it's worth a try.

If you want to be safe in America, follow this one simple rule: If you are worried that someone is a threat to you, act with swift and ruthless violence towards them before they have the chance.

Exactly. After the article said that the USA is rated "low-risk" by several countries, I stopped reading and decided that Subby was the problem.

Good. Should have been there a long time now. The US is absolutely a dangerous country.

Seems about right.

CSB: It was weird walking around Tokyo at 2 a.m. deep in some urban neighborhood with about 2 or 3 grand in my pocket. I knew that I would not be farked with and was completely safe, as most people were scared of me. (6 foot 3)

Seriously, there should be kiosks selling AR-15s, ammo and body armor at the airport

And don't get me started on the racist farkers that come to threads about Mexico and spread their BS about what a shiathole it is with cartel violence, when you are far more likely to be shot dead going shopping or going to school right here in the US than while on vacation in Mexico

"She's much less likely now to venture out alone when visiting the United States versus London, where she has no worries about doing so."

Having lived many years in London, and in the US, I'd be much more worried about all levels of violent crime in London than most places I've lived or visited in the US, especially for folks who aren't looking for trouble there's a lot more marauding trouble out looking for people in the UK than the US (IME).

Yeh.  LIke Miami.  It got so any rental car near the Miami airport meant that unarmed and clueless travelers were inside.

The rental companies had to remove their little emblems from the cars because customers kept turning up dead from carjackings and kidnappings.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth office used to post my favorite:  something like  "Be aware that the US is a different country from the UK.  The laws are different.  The police are different.  Being arrested is a lot more humiliating and expensive and less safe.

We should close the borders, to protect the foreign nationals.  If they can't come here, they will be safer.  If it saves even one child, it will be worth it.

Problem solved.

Back when the mob ran Las Vegas, tourists were absolutely safe. If you robbed tourists, you got a one-way trip into the desert. Ruthless and politically incorrect, but effective.

There were three yesterday and one this morning.  It's so common that unless there is an unusually high body count it barely gets noticed outside local media.

610 mass shootings in 329 days, approaching 2 a day for the year which is up considerably from 1.5 per day a few months ago which means we are averaging well over 2 a day since the end of summer.

The worst issue with travel to the US from most western nations is the fact that the healthcare system is set up to bleed the most from any tourist unfortunate to need them.

You can have the best gold-plated Cadillac travel healthcare insurance available, but some of those f*ckers will STILL find ways to stick it to you with items supposedly "not covered" like 10$ aspirins and multi-thousand-dollar ambulance rides.

Even though the insurance company says they have 100% settled with the hospital on your behalf, those SOBs will keep sending you bills in the hope of double-dipping.  They can be persistent buggars.

My favorite advice for tourist safety was when I visited DC about 20 years ago.

If you can see a monument, you're fine. If you can't, quickly find a monument.

Mainly because we don't murder tourists.

Also don't forget that being shot in the US can be very expensive, so might want to pop for the international travel health insurance

You can go out at night in other countries and have no need to "remain cautious".  And there aren't really any "bad areas" either.  I know it's hard to believe.

That would make a good crime thriller TV show; US medical company hires Eastern European gangsters to hunt down collections across Europe, and nobody believes the one Interpol agent who has discovered the truth.

Get the best travel insurance you can if you go to the states. Something as simple as a broken leg can bankrupt you, never mind getting shot, stabbed, etc.

If you are a women, make sure you carry "plan b", since most of the fundie states will not dispense it, and you might have to travel a bit to get it.

dress conservatively, don't show too much skin, don't make fun of the locals, assume everyone has a a gun, and a short temper.

travel with a disposable cellphone, since it will probably be searched at the border.

treat it kind of like traveling to a third world shiathole, and act appropriately.

Before clicking on that link I thought most of the states will either be red states.  Yea guns!! Or blue states. Yer soft on crime!!  But it was about 50-50 of both

Well, Mexico's gun homicide rate is over 16 per 100k vs 4 for the US, so despite all the mass shootings we're still about 4x safer, that's not racist it's just facts.
