Costa Rica coach benching all his washed up vets for the Japan game.
Japan started this game better, but nothing too threatening so far

Instructions unclear, cheering for only visible team playing in red.  Go (checks notes) Costa Rica!

A few Germans in the stands. I guess one plus of going to this World Cup is you can attend multiple games in the same day.

In fact you probably should, because there's not much else to do.

Costa Rica playing way too cautiously in a must-win game.

Though from what I heard in a casual podcast from  a journalist on location, it's going to be difficult to get to more than two games on the same day.
He said something about journalists being only allowed to get accredited to a maximum of two games per day and that that's more than enough, because some of the stadiums are still pretty far away from each other.
And if you can't go to a stadium by subway, you'll likely be stuck in traffic. And you have to figure in delays due to ticket and security checks.

So it's still very unlikely that you will be able to make it to two games that are back-to-back within that one hour between games.

There are four games every day. There are 7 hours between the end of this match and the start of Germany vs Spain. Those German fans have enough time to grab some beers at the hotel before heading over there.

.. though in that particular case, with Japan-Costa Rica being the 1st and Spain-Germany being the 4th (prime time in Europe) game of the day, that should be doable.

/ more surprising is that there are enough Germans that care about this World Cup enough to be on location that they can be noticed
//  wasn't interested enough to watch more than 15 minutes of Ger-Jap, to the later amusement of my mom whom I told before the match "don't bother, it's going to be a copy of 2018 and Japan will be winning 2:0 or maybe 2:1 if Germany can score from a set piece"

Yeah. :)
Just wanted to add some color / additional info because until I heard that guy, I didn't think far enough about it to realize that, while the country isn't that big, its road infrastructure isn't really designed to handle that kind of rush hour traffic.

I guess Japan doesn't really have too much incentive to push -- a draw today for them and a Spain win against Germany and they're pretty much through.

They might regret a draw if Germany gets something against Spain though.

Good chance for Japan, nice save from Keylor Navas.

I believe no team in World Cup history has ever lost twice in the group stage and still advanced to the knockouts.  If Spain beats Germany, Spain beats Japan, and Germany beats Costa Rica (all of which seem reasonable), we'll have our first.

(Conversely, two teams have made it through without winning a single game -- Wales in 1958 and Chile in 1998)

And it's conceivable that if it's a close game between Germany and Spain (1-0) and Germany whups up on Costa Rica like Spain did, it will be Germany going on after losing their first two matches...

Can these talking heads shut the fark up already over this bullshiat made up "controversy" about Canada and Croatia?

Christ on a cracker.  Nobody gives a fark except these assholes.  As if the Croatian team was going into the game all shrugging their shoulders before the guy dissed them and NOW they're motivated to win.

Some of the Belgium players did an interview where they were asked if they could win the cup and they said "no, we're too old".

Belgian humour being what it is, they were *probably* joking.

Croatia are perhaps a little sensitive at the moment given the political situation in that part of the world. Serbia threatening moves on Montenegro, Orban over in Hungary banging on about greater Hungary (if Russia can take back things that used to be theirs, why not Hungary? Croatia and Romanian are not impressed)

So yeah, just joshing from Canada, but a target not in the mood for it.

Thank your local linemen and those in civil service, kids!

About twenty minutes before the first match of the morning, my power went down.

"Oh great, at this time on a Sunday morning? fark me."

Unplugged some stuff and checked for the estimate on my phone before shutting it off.

"Okay, sweet, a little less than five hours."

Well, couldn't watch soccer so I went for a run. On my way back I saw there was a truck out front of one place with what looked like another truck in the backyard behind the house. I didn't see anybody out front and the last thing people want to do when working is to be unnecessarily bothered even if there isn't a potential safety issue caused by some dumbass going back there to thank them.

Anyways, those poor bastards had to get out of bed on a rainy Sunday morning because I assume there is a very limited number of linemen already on the clock at that hour. I'm sure they get some "thanks" every now and then but when your job consists almost exclusively of only dealing with unhappy people it sort of has to suck sometimes. They got the power back up and running in a touch over three hours. In addition to being awesome, they are...
