It's because we tend to mentally flatten time into distinct periods where everything contained therein might as well of happened all at the same time.  When these clash, either between them or internally, it can do some interesting mental things.

T-Rex is closer to us than stegosaurus.

It is easy, but it has to be personal like Subby's to really hit you in the olds.

The weirdest birthday was the one where I realized more time had passed between my birthday and my birth date than had passed between my birth date and World War I. That was some weapons grade Ooftonium.

It's because we tend to mentally flatten time into distinct periods where everything contained therein might as well of happened all at the same time.  When these clash, either between them or internally, it can do some interesting mental things.

A good example of an internal clash is the Cleopatra one from up there, because we flatten the ancient period to contain everything pretty much from the foundations of society to the fall of Rome.  It temporarily expands just how much time we've compressed in our heads.  Or that T Rex (84-65 million years ago) is closer to us in time than it is to Stegosaurus(155-150 million years ago), because we flatten the nearly 200 million year long Dinosaur era to all be at the same time.

A good example of a intra period clash would be that Harriet Tubman was alive when Thomas Jefferson died and died after Woodrow Wilson became President, because it bridges the era of powdered wigs with the modern era where there's cars and radio and shiat, showing just how short of a span of time existed between these two very distinct and mentally separate eras.

I remember the birthday I was old enough to drive older than old enough to drink, old enough to drink older than old enough to drink, and now I'm approaching old enough to drive us old enough to drink older than old enough to drink.
But they are going to cure aging soon, and then things will really get interesting.

Horatio's drive is the story of the first road trip across America. Happened in 1903. The journey took several months
About 70 years before that drive was the Lewis and Clark trip across America. That took several years.
About 70 years after Horatio's drive, people stepped onto the moon. Took only a couple days.

That was two days after I graduated from high school. I turned 18 a couple weeks later. At the mall, there had been advance posters up for Revenge of the Jedi, then they were changed sometime around release, and I was always a little annoyed I hadn't managed to snag an original one.

Cleopatra lived closer in time to the building of the first Pizza Hut than to the building of the pyramids.

I have photographic proof that Pizza Hut (and KFC) are contemporaries with the Pyramids (and Sphinx).

The weirdest birthday was the one where I realized more time had passed between my birthday retirement* and my birth date than had passed between my birth date and World War I the Spanish-American war. That was some weapons grade Ooftonium.
