How much do people get paid to play for the national team? Does Messi get the same pay as the other people on the field?

Club teams pay way, WAY more than the national teams ever do. That said, yes, they get paid, although I have no clue whether everyone gets a flat fee plus bonuses based on how deep in the tournament the team goes. Argentina and Messi are weird b/c he was 9 (maybe 8?) years old when he signed up for Barca, and one of the stipulations of his contract was he was going to play for Argentina, not Spain. It wouldn't shock me if he had a special contract w/ the Argentine FA separate from anyone else. I'd believe that more than Ronaldo having a special deal w/ the Portuguese FA.

If you play for Saudi Arabia, Bonesaw just gifted you a Rolls Royce for actually winning a game

It's FIFA in Qatar. They're paid with slaves and barrels of oil.

The Iraqi national team from when Sadam was in charged was punished for not making the World Cup by being forced to kick stone soccer balls. True story

I don't think you're supposed to "Oh snap " your own comment but I guess a guy called CrazyCurt can do pretty much whatever he wants.

Pay is determined by the national association. Similarly, any prize money is divided up based on the decisions of the national association. So the pay for different teams varies massively.

For example, England players get GBP2,500 per game, but for many years all England players have donated their compensation to charity.

US players get $10,000 per game plus a share of prize money (which is shared between the Men's and Women's teams). They get about $200,000 for losing in the group stage with a theoretical maximum of almost $1 million if they somehow won it all (the highest where pay is known).

Players in top club leagues or top players in lower leagues will make far, far, far more from their clubs than international play (not to mention endorsements). For regular players in lower leagues it may be significant, though.

As to why players play in the World Cup, nationalism is part of it but even if players don't care about nationalidm:

1) It is the biggest stage, make a name for yourself at the World Cup and you probably get a bunch of sponsorship deals and you are sitting pretty the next time you negotiate a salary.
2) For top players where that is not a big deal, its expected. If someone like Messi said "it's not worth my time" that would almost certainly be enormously bad PR and likely cost a ton in endorsements etc.

Uday Hussein was well known for torturing athletes, particularly the national team football players. There were rumors some were actually killed.

Looking at the explanations for what teams need to get in makes my head spin. So many teams have a chance. Maybe some people have enough confidence to bet on who makes it through.

Typical dumb query: I assume that FIFA requires that a person be a citizen, be it by birth or through naturalization, to play for a country's national team?

Are the rules so loose as to not be obstacles at all in the way that the Olympics work?

In general:

You have to be a national (generally equating to citizen) of the country.
If you acquire nationality to a country (or your nationality covers multiple teams,* ie the US and Puerto Rico): you or a parent or grandparent must have been born in the country or you must have resided there five consecutive years.
Once you have played a competitive match for a country you are locked into that country with narrow exceptions, notably you can change countries on transitioning from junior play to senior.

There are a whole ton of details and specific cases (ie stateless.individuals, creation of new countries, etc) but that is the general idea.

*Except for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland which have their own agreement on eligibility between each other.

If Mexico kicks the crap out of the Saudis they have a chance to finish second in the group. I wouldn't bet on it though. This group ended up being surprisingly above average and also incredibly disappointing at the same time.

In professional sports, there are 3 choices that will never get a GM fired if they don't pan out.

In the NBA, the team with the 15th or 16th pick will choose a guy who played well in the Final Four.

In the NFL, unless there is an obviously better choice, taking a lineman from Alabama is not only safe, it makes the fan base feel smart. "Yeah, it's not a sexy pick, but the game is won in the trenches."

And in club soccer, bringing in a guy who just had a great World Cup is always exciting.
