I don't remember any Nintendo Entertainment System starting at $150.

I think they were about $200 the year I got one. I can't be sure, though.

Yeah we sent enough UPC codes as a kid and they'd send us a Mario watch which HAD A GAME IN IT

or like $550, adjusted for inflation.

about 50 gals of gas?
2 new video games?
6 pizzas?
about 50 handies from subby's mom?

In 1986, you could also pay $150 to be ripped off by Casio.

I had the set with the NES, the blaster, and the power pad.  The power pad still works fine.

2022-11-26 8:53:44 AM
I'm pretty sure it was $149.99 for the NES, controller orange light gun, power pad and the cartridge with SMB, Duck Hunt and Track and Field in the late 80's.

If the price of the watch were $35, I'd probably buy it. That's the top of my range.
If the watch had more functionality, I'd consider paying more.

2022-11-26 9:17:25 AM
But it can run Doom?

Seriously though this looks like a $29 watch

2022-11-26 9:18:58 AM
I googled it. Subby ain't lying. The "Action set" NES was $149.99 in 1988, or about $500 today.

That $150 watch today is the equivalent of $60 back in the NES era.

Wow, that's a special kind of ugly. I've noticed that the very worst trends of the late 80's has been replicated. Terrible neon colors and peg leg (skinny) jeans. What's next? Jorts? Meh.

That's what I assumed, it actually played the game.

For $150 it better have a James Bond laser.

Who is this for?  No, seriously.  Say someone gave me one of these watches, with the condition that I'd have to gift it to someone. I can think of literally nobody in my life, even in my extended circles, who would appreciate it for what it is.  I sure as hell wouldn't want it.  I can't think of a reason for its existence beyond being another thing for collectors to buy and sell to each other.

TFA:"The retro-themed Super Mario watch will cost $150 and is limited to one per-customer, which is handy as the scalpers will have difficulty getting hold of them and reselling"

hilarious.

I love old school Casio watches and have two: the classic A158WA-1 and it's sister the F91W-1. They are solid digital watches. They keep excellent time, can take a beating, are water resistant, and they're cheap (I believe I got mine a few years ago for $20 a piece.)

They have some nostalgic value, but they are not collector's items and definitely not worth $150. Also, it looks like the band on the Nintendo watch is similar to the band on the F91W1-1, in which case, it will break after a year of use.

It's cute but not $150 cute.

For about $60 I can get a raspberry pi or similar, plus a USB controller, and a memory stick that holds every NES and SNES cartridge ever made on a fraction of the storage. I can also run a graphical OS on it, play more modern games and videos at 4k (as opposed to 360p). If I want to splurge a little, I could get wireless controller.

Yup, sure is incredible living in the future unless you go out of your way to look for stupid comparisons about historical technology.

I'm guessing this article writer is like 17?

CSB: Christmas 1985 or 1986 I remember rationalizing $150 with my dad that if he gave me $10 per A on my report card, the NES would almost pay for itself! He wasn't convinced but he got me back by buying the unit with me, and since I knew what the present was he didn't bother to wrap it. That box sat in his closet for about 2 months and I would go and stare at it until I worked up enough nerve to work at the tape so I could smell the unit and read the manual. I don't recall if I ever hooked it up before Christmas.

But one of my friends did! He would hook the entire system up and rewrap it before his parents came home from work. It was whatever Christmas the first Zelda game came out, might have been the same Christmas. Anyway, he got into a dungeon and didn't notice or hear his dad arrive home. He panics as he hears the door slam and frantically rip the game out, put it back into box, but he didn't fix the tape back right. He runs out to family room and tries to distract his parents and place the game back under the tree. He spazzed out so much, they knew something was up and checked the game. The jig was up, but he was a habitual liar and INSISTED he didn't play the game. "Then why is the game hot?", I remember him telling me they asked. He refused to admit it and said he was running away because no one ever believes him.

So, he runs outside in his PJs, socks and a t-shirt during December in Chicago, trudges through 3 feet of snow, gets halfway down the block before he realizes he left his shoes at home, his feet were cold, his arms were cold, and he looks back towards his house and sees his dad standing in the doorway, holding a belt I'm his hand.

Lol he slowly walked back home to get to get his butt whooped. Later, as a teenager no longer subject to being whooped, he would destroy all of his father's belts.

I still have said watch in perfect working order. I collect gaming stuff, especially vintage. That being said, the watch from this article is useless. I could put a red guard and a mario face of my choosing on my apple watch and it would look much better than that.

Inflation, how does it work?

/In 1986, you would pay $500 for a 19" CRT. That is $1,359 in 2022 dollars. In comparison, you can buy an 80 inch LED TV for that today.

Also, a $10 raspberry pi has far more powerful hardware specs in pretty much every single respect than what a Nintendo NES had.
