CSB: Christmas 1985 or 1986 I remember rationalizing $150 with my dad that if he gave me $10 per A on my report card, the NES would almost pay for itself! He wasn't convinced but he got me back by buying the unit with me, and since I knew what the present was he didn't bother to wrap it. That box sat in his closet for about 2 months and I would go and stare at it until I worked up enough nerve to work at the tape so I could smell the unit and read the manual. I don't recall if I ever hooked it up before Christmas.

But one of my friends did! He would hook the entire system up and rewrap it before his parents came home from work. It was whatever Christmas the first Zelda game came out, might have been the same Christmas. Anyway, he got into a dungeon and didn't notice or hear his dad arrive home. He panics as he hears the door slam and frantically rip the game out, put it back into box, but he didn't fix the tape back right. He runs out to family room and tries to distract his parents and place the game back under the tree. He spazzed out so much, they knew something was up and checked the game. The jig was up, but he was a habitual liar and INSISTED he didn't play the game. "Then why is the game hot?", I remember him telling me they asked. He refused to admit it and said he was running away because no one ever believes him.

So, he runs outside in his PJs, socks and a t-shirt during December in Chicago, trudges through 3 feet of snow, gets halfway down the block before he realizes he left his shoes at home, his feet were cold, his arms were cold, and he looks back towards his house and sees his dad standing in the doorway, holding a belt I'm his hand.

Lol he slowly walked back home to get to get his butt whooped. Later, as a teenager no longer subject to being whooped, he would destroy all of his father's belts.
