Nope, I still won't care about the World Cup. Try again with a less overtly corrupt organization in a less overtly repressive region.

Because obviously the NFL is only at the level of "acceptably corrupt" because reasons

Do the following sports meet your level of acceptably corrupt:
-Thumb wrestling?
-Horse shoes?
-Wheelbarrow racing?
-Global thermonuclear war?

Hey! I'm going to that game today. Hope you don't get barked at too much. Look for me; I'll be in red.
I'm not going to say they were dominant, certainly. But that defense was pretty good with only a few lapses. Crossing fingers for the next one.
/less than a mile from the stadium now! Off to get mom.

I admit that there are crippled waterfowl who understand this sport more than I do.

But how does one team "dominate" a scoreless tie game? Are their methods of staying off the scoreboard more manly and persistent than those of the other players?

/ not subby

I didn't see this particular game so maybe there was no dominating here, but one team can quite easily dominate a drawn game. If team A has 80% possession, has 20 shots to team B's one shot, forcing 15 saves then team A totally dominated team B.

This is why you shouldn't always dismiss goalless draws as dull. Some are packed with action, just no actual goals. Many are dull of course, just not all ;-)

Oh. So the scoreless exercise in futility can prove to be an exciting and compelling one. Unsatisfying though the final score may be.

Thanks for the clarification.

I should also recognize that nobody knows that they are watching a scoreless tie game until it is over. So it can be non-stop edge of your seat entertainment until the very end.

I see that now.

Here is what annoys me about the USMNT and their fans; they want it both ways. They want to be taken seriously as top level team, yet a 0-0 match against England gets considered "US beats England0-0" and "I hope we gave the country something to be proud of." Look they played a first rate game, one not unexpected for a team ranked in the mid teens, but it wasn't exactly the upset on a Saudi Arabia - Argentina level.

2022-11-26 9:32:50 AM
For the most part (aside from the first 10-15 minutes), the US were clearly the better side. The final 15 minutes pretty much looked like both teams said "Draw? Draw." and kinda half-assed it. Between was kinda fun.

But by drawing, all the US needs is a win against Iran and all England needs is to avoid losing by 7 to Wales.

2022-11-26 9:36:12 AM
And Wales are kind of in that college football mindset: If they beat England they had a great World Cup; they don't give a f*ck about making it out of the group stages.

2022-11-26 9:40:58 AM
It is a shame to see someone try to be clever when they clearly didn't watch the match or understand the sport.

Even in armored wanker-ball, where it takes nearly 4 hours to complete 60 minutes of play, one team can dominate the other in every statistic except the final score.

Here's what gets me about farkers who don't understand soccer: they cannot grasp the fact that if the top-tier team does not dominate the much lower ranked one and score several more goals, the lower ranked team has succeeded in proving themselves.

In this case, England was forced into playing not to lose by the more dynamic USA team. The soccer world knows the USA thoroughly outplayed England,  the tragedy is there are too many blind fools in America.

This.

The NFL is a garbage organization that blacklisted a player for kneeling during the national anthem in order to create greater awareness of police brutality towards a subsection of our culture, and people were pissed off. Just not pissed off enough to... Ya know.... Stop using the goddamned product.

Sports fans are junkies.

American professional sports are rank amateurs when it comes to corruption.  FIFA, the IOC, and F1 bribe circles around them.

Why do you think the NFL is so hung up on expanding the brand overseas? If they want to improve their corruption game, they've got to learn new techniques from all over the world.

Touched a nerve, did it?  It is merely an apt description of the tv commercial extravaganza interrupted infrequently by heavily armed men who spend more time celebrating a simple tackle than actually playing.

Netherlands-Ecuador was like that too.

That was a bit more understandable -- both of those teams are definitely moving on. I wish the USA would have played with more urgency. If beating Iran is so easy, how come Iran beat Wales, which the USA couldn't do?

I was thinking... if the USA ever stunned the world and won the World Cup, I think the rest of the world would react the way all of us would react if Duke won the national football championship. Sure, it's an incredibly improbable upset. And yet.

This might be the most American analysis of football/soccer I've ever seen.

Of course, it's entirely and utterly wrong, but said with the requisite dismissal of the world's most popular sport and the arrogance of ignorance.

Bravo.

Mostly because they were playing 11-on-10. But in fairness, if the US catches a red card early against Iran, they're basically f*cked.
