So, is it as much of a train wreck as the Star Wars holiday special?

That was quite fun.

Loved the mid-credits scene too. :)

It's the complete 180 of the Star Wars Holiday Special.

The opening music is 'Fairy Tale of New York', to give you an idea.

/Drunk Mantis is Best Mantis...

The similar naming is apparently completely intentional.

So... no.

I kind of hated it, but I hate everything christmas. And groot looked terrible

Kids will probably enjoy it though.

Much better musical numbers.

Poor Cy-Kill will never be anything more than someone's punching bag.

He was the go-to character model for Transformers comic artists when they needed a random 'bot to get pummeled.

Quill having a sister is the same as Luke Skywalker having a sister. Basically, the MCU and Star Wars are the same thing, as foretold by Patton Oswalt in that episode of Parks and Recreation.

Rocket is obviously Han Solo. Groot is Chewbacca. Drax is Yoda. Zerg-nuts are The Force.

Yeah, it looked like it.

Just wondering if they went with Chubby Groot as a reference to Lumpy from the SWHS.

My kid complained about Groot's look.  It's obviously because they wanted to put a guy in a simple latex suit instead of having to worry about all the motion capture and graphics work of inserting a CGI character into a lot of scenes... but they probably should have chosen a much skinnier person to put in the suit.

It looked like the far off shots of Groot were a guy in a suit.  The closeups looked fine. Ticket looked fine.

Overall it was awesome.

Really enjoyed this for what it was. Got some genuine laughs out of me, but I just love the Guardians and enjoy seeing them anytime they pop up. Can't wait for Volume 3 next year.

I get the feeling there are some fun background gags/easter eggs hidden throughout, too. I saw Tazr Face was apparently calling himself that for a long time, for example.

Yeap people expect him to do the Footloose dance to this day. I blame Jimmy Fallon.

Looked like Vin Diesel in a kaiju-suit.

The credits only credit him with the voice, and I don't honestly see Diesel putting in the effort to do the physical performance for the part of Groot.

*Looked like*. The suit made whoever it was appear much broader/thicker than the Groot we're used to.

I think the Groot suit was intentionally bad and cheesy. It is mocking Christmas Specials.

I did enjoy it and laugh a good bit.

Did anyone else think the animated bits looked like they were from Heavy Metal?

Yeah, there was definitely a rotoscoping look/feel going on there.

Extras on the show say no. He was a mocap guy and totally CG in the final product.

I've heard of a Zoot Suit but never a Groot Suit.

I wonder if the animated segments were planned from the start, or if it was part of a deal to get Michael Rooker to come back without having to go through all the makeup process again.

It looked like the Nelvana-animated Boba Fett segment from the Star Wars Holiday Special.

It was a deliberate choice.

And he only paused a moment when he heard them holler stop
...and then they opened fire

Are we over Draxx yet?

The opening number was fun, and it was all down hill from there.

Groot literally looked like a guy in a Groot. costume, I laughed every time but not for the reason Gunn was going for I think.

Okay, James Gunn has weighed in on Groot...

Apparently Groot does, actually, die in GotG. That twig wasn't Groot regenerating, it was Groot's offspring. Now that Groot Jr. is out of it's adolescent phase, it's continuing to grow and developing differently than Groot Sr.

Definitely a fun entry for both Christmas and GotG and the first Marvel thing I've watched all year, and you don't really need any prior knowledge to get it.

Looks like everyone enjoyed and was into it, KB had a blast, and it breezes by at 40 minutes.

Nebula's gift to Rocket was the greatest callback ever.
