There was a time the British Raj tried to eradicate venomous snakes in India by offering a bounty for each dead one handed in. The locals quickly figured out that it was easier to breed snakes than to chase them down, the population exploded, the bounty budget was exhausted, so the program was cancelled, so all the surplus snakes were released.

End result: twice as many snakes as there were before, and most of them hungry

They DO know that those things carry diseases, and kids handling them without gloves is probably inadvisable?

Hope they wash their hands before lunch, at least.

Yeah we've had that problem with possum bounties many moons ago.

The difference here is that the goal is to save our national icon, and most people buy into that over profit motivation.

Each child was given their own trap, made from recycled political billboards.

There's something almost poetic about that.

That's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the five-year-olds simply freeze to death.

A rat terrier holds the rat killing record of 2501 rats in a seven hour period in an infested barn. There is no substitute unless you add a bunch of minks to the equation.

How are they going to eliminate rats completely? Killing a bunch of rats is very different from killing every last one of them in the country. Rats, like most rodents, are famous for reproducing rapidly so even if 97% of them got wiped out they'd be back in force before long.

At some point, it's not about a "zero rat" policy anymore. If you read the article (I know, right?) you can.already see it.

It's about the love of the game, the bloodlust, the kill.

The children are the easiest to teach this to.

This will in no way have any negative impact in about 15-20 years.
