One of the best holiday films ever made, and a fantastic chance for John Candy to play a dramatic role. The guy had serious range and emotion.

Still sorely missed :(

"Marie's been dead for 8 years"

No matter how many times I've seen this movie, that line just rips me up every time.

For me, it's when Gil is doing the flashbacks in his head and gets to "I haven't been home in years." and realizes what it actually means.

An entire subplot where the wife thought Neal was having an affair instead of coming home for Thanksgiving was part of the footage on the cutting room floor.  The context helps explain the emotion you see; the amount of relief on her face is WAY beyond Neal making it home.  She's relieved that Del is real.

I can't help watching movies like Planes and even Uncle Buck without getting a little emotional.

That was a John Candy ad-lib line, even though Steve said it.

Andy Lipschultz (Unit Publicist): To me the funniest line, the famous line, was, "Where's your other hand?" "Between two pillows," "Those aren't pillows!" Okay, that was not in the script. That is a John Candy line...That was something John Candy came up with on set.

When this movie came out I was too young to understand the ending and what Dell's situation was. As I've gotten older and experienced life and travels, I totally get it now

I love this movie. But I hate watching it on regular network TV. The car rental scene is worthless without all the F bombs.

Gil was Steve Martin's character in Parenthood. Neal Page was his character in PTAA.

That explains why she gets kind of defensive when he's in Witchita and she's upset and is like "what's going on"?

The original title was Planes, Trains, Boats, Bicycles, Skates, Skiis, Horses, Hang Gliders and Automobiles, but they knew it was just too much. They had to cut scenes not just to shorten the runtime, but the title.
