Fifty kya isn't all that long a period of time. I'd be careful with it none the less. We're going to start finding out just how many of these cryo-viruses are able to infect modern humans pretty soon once the permafrost melts. The ones I'm worried about are the smallpox viruses from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Nice thing if it does make a comeback we should be able to whip up a vaccine pretty quickly and that's when the rubber will hit the road with the anti-vax idiots.

it is exceedingly unlikely, plus most of the time the problem isn't that we're resistant to them, but that they aren't compatible with our machinery

We could also just brew up a bunch of cowpox and infect everyone in a pinch.

The infectivity / immunity arms race runs in circles a lot of the time.  Odds are about even whether a given thawing virus would be a laughably ineffective today or a super-spreader... but more than one virus will be thawing out.

HOWEVER... that virus would have to be one that can infect and thrive in life it's likely to encounter, and would have to be suited either to pass to humans or to mutate in its intermediate host in a way that makes it a danger to humans, and THEN that host would have to infect a human.

Researchers digging viruses out of recently thawed ground would seem to be the prime threat for an ancient virus resurfacing as a modern plague.
