Down at Fraggle Rock,
Grab a Fraggle by its c...,
Swing it round and round your head,
Keep going till that Fraggle's dead.

Yeah, I went to a bad school.

I had my hands in the turkey, so I couldn't make out the whole bit. "I don't see the parade anywhere," while the entire marching band is right behind him.

The thing about "children's" entertainment is that it's all made by adults. The best children's shows are also aimed at adults but children can watch too. Jim Henson was a master at that. Ask the Muppet Show or David Bowie's ludicrous goblin dong.

I don't remember that from the old show, but the Muppet show they tried to bring back several years ago definitely had a lot of humor that would be really inappropriate if it didn't go over kids' heads.

Was there ever an episode where the Fraggles stopped eating the Doozers' buildings for whatever reasons? Did the Doozers get sad that their hard work wasn't being appreciated, or happy because they could finally finish building their shiat in peace?

I miss Muppets Tonight.

Muppets Tonight is such an amazingly underated show. It held true to the original, kept up with its times, and just honored the brand.

I'd also argue the last 2 muppets movies did the same. I know the second one gets its flack, but it was still solid.

Fraggle was awesome because as a kid when we were that age it made you think about stuff and ask questions, but still got laughs in. Hell, I STILL have questions about doozer society.

However, all of this gets tied together, because there is a Sesame Street\Muppets\Fraggle crossover christmas movie, which, while mediocre, you get to see Big Bird argue with bober and and Kermit over something, which really puts sesame street in a whole new light. I always figured Gordon was calling the shots.

Yes there was. In it, one of the main characters (the red one?) convinced the others that consuming the Doozer sticks was cruel and unneighbourly. Turns out, the two groups were in a symbiotic relationship. Once the Doozers ran out of room and could no longer build, they became despondent after they no longer had a purpose.

Oh yeah, it's coming back to me now. But didn't they also dig the tunnels? Couldn't they have just made more room to build?

The Doozers had a symbiotic relationship with the Fraggles, using edible materials for their constructs. They depended on the Fraggles to eat those constructs and open space for them to keep building. So when the Fraggles stopped eating them and they'd filled the available space, they had no reason to remain. As I recall, they were planning to leave Fraggle Rock and find a new home when the Fraggles finally came to their senses.

That's the point.

Kids are adult seeds. They want to develop into adults, but they're not there yet. Good children's entertainment is just adult entertainment with the dirty stuff a step removed.  The kids will miss or be engaged trying to figure out the adults only jokes, the adults will get all the jokes, and if it's all well done, everyone loves it.

Batman TAS is a good example too.  It's obstinately for kids, but you've got stories about dying spouses, domestic abuse, terrorism, same sex relationships, debilitating injuries, big rocks. The stories were written by adults for the adults they knew would be watching with the kids, then sanitized for the timeslot and target demo.  Still holds up today.

Calilu? The weird bald kid, apparently didn't even hold up during broadcast.

That's what Sinclair tells you to think. But do they also tell you to regurgitate those talking points? Or did you decide on your own they needed regurgitated for some reason?
