What, there's no racism in the UK?

But when making it to Colorado, Mel B said she was "shocked" at the lack of diversity in the state, admitting it changed her "outlook in a few ways."

The story is that the US is racist because everyone was white in some area of Colorado. Has she visited any rural areas of the UK?

not for nothing, one suspects that she's in an area of Colorado that's only frequented by rich people. I've been to Aspen and, yes, the mountains aren't the only thing covered in whiteness.

No where near the level in the US. Even the EU published a report in 2019 saying the UK was just about the least racist country in western Europe. And we did just appoint a Prime Minister called Rishi Sunak....

Yeah, an area that hasn't changed demographically isn't inherently racist.  The people who were there already had kids, other people haven't found enough reason to move there to shift the ethnic makeup of the region.

Calling an area 'racist' because it's mostly one ethnicity is not a great way to decide how to apply that label.

"Mel B said she was "shocked" at the lack of diversity in the state"
"Throughout the whole show, I was saying, 'Is there anybody brown or mixed or Black in this town? Is there anybody?'

So not seeing any black people in whatever town she was in equals racism?

Tell me you're white without telling me you're white...

Mel B has likely very, very rarely witnessed direct racism in the UK as an adult...because she's been iconically famous in the UK almost her entire adult life.

Yeah, after you went down the bottom of the barrel with Theresa May, Boris Johnson, and  Liz Truss

Kinda funny UK hasn't have an MP that was elected by the people for years.

As easy as it is to point out racism in the US, she somehow managed to fail miserably trying to do that.

She was nineteen when the Spice Girls were formed. So you admit that a black person can live in the UK for nineteen tears and see very little racism?
You're kinda proving my point there.

So Mel B says the UK isn't racist. The EU says the UK isn't racist. A panel of British academics, mostly black, says the UK isn't racist. Distinguished panel of experts who produced controversial race report | Daily Mail Online. Our "right wing" Conservative party just made an Asian our Prime Minister, with almost zero public reaction of the way a lot of Americans reacted when Obama became President.

You're not exactly providing a lot of evidence to back up your argument. Saying "Well obviously she hasn't experienced racism because she's famous!" is not a reasonable argument.

Right?  She should drop by Alabama. Plenty of people of color there, but I bet she'll find more than enough actual real racism.

My take is, England isn't even AT THE POINT of facing racism or what racism even means.  When you have blinders on, yeah, i'm sure you think everything is perfect.

At least shiat get exposed and brought to light in the US, and assessments can be made of progress or lack thereof.

People have doubted your actual familiarity with the UK for many, many years. You're sort of proving it here (I grew up a few miles from Mel B, I know exactly the environment she was raised in - her parents went to the same pub as mine).

Yea, she must not have visited Denver, or just gone to places only the wealthy can play and participate. I see one pic of her at a ranch, if she had gone to a rodeo she would have seen diversity. Also, does she not count Latinos?

Google says England is 3 by percent black and Colorado is almost 5.

The US as a whole floats around 13 percent black. Leave the south or major urban areas it's very white

And this article is about some spice girl in Colorado. Has anyone told her about Boebert yet?

We elected a president named Barack Hussein Obama and all it did was galvanize the racists here.

eh. Denver is still largely white.

When I was in Colorado Springs once for a party, there was one black girl there (out of maybe 30 people total) and I was chatting with her while getting a drink. Found out she had moved to Colorado Springs from New Orleans about 5 years back. I asked her what she missed the most and, no shiat, she said "having other black people around."

/Spice girl's comment is still facepalmy

Ymmv CSB: I saw so few black people in Colorado, that when two came into my shop to get one of their cars repaired, I had to ask them what it was like being black in Colorado. Somewhat enlightening answers (mostly good, actually) ensued. My coworker from Virginia heard my question and was freaking out behind them, like "you can't ask that!". Anyhow, we had a great conversation and I left with a better perspective. Later, I had to explain to my coworker that I'm a naturally curious and extroverted person, the kind that asks one-armed, or black, or little, or culturally unusual, customers questions to help me understand what it is like in their shoes. I believe that if your question comes for a genuine desire to know and learn, then almost no topic is taboo. So far, this philosophy has served me well. I recall a particularly fascinating conversation with a young sihk man about coordinating his headwear into his fashion choices. I only get one, rather myopic, trip through this world... Why wouldn't I try to expand that view, if only vicariously?

I've lived in Montana for most of my life but it's  not because  I prefer white people.  What does she think people do, just wish away all the undesirable elements so they can have all the nice places?
I mean, sure, most of it was caused by institutional racism, but I don't think she's talking about that.

This survey? The one that says 1 in 5 black people in the U.K. reported being harassed because of their race?

There's a story where she once took another Spice Girl to a "black" club. She said, "I'm the only white person here!"

Mel B reportedly said, "Now you know how I feel."

She doesn't count the average Latinos because, going by her quote upthread, they're apparently not dark enough for her. Obviously she didn't even consider East Asians as adding to diversity.

Sounds like she's the one with the problem.

My experience is that racism in the UK is more the quiet backroom stuff.  Old white people who talk about 'those people' taking over the country and that letting 'them' in was a mistake.  After all, it was one of the driving forces behind Brexit.

We have that in Canada, too.  It's amazing how when you're a white guy and find yourself in a place where everybody's white how there's always that one guy (or frequently woman) who feels comfortable dropping the dog whistles... but dropping 'n-bombs' in public and refusing service isn't something I can recall seeing in the news.  Maybe in Quebec or Alberta.

Yes, America is still very racist.  As W. Kamau Bell put it so well:  In other countries, racism is a garnish, in America, racism is baked in.

And yet, this article is complete bullshiat.  Did someone hurl a racial slur her way?  Was she treated differently because of her skin tone in an obviously racist way?

Just being in an area where almost everyone has one particular set of genes that make up their DNA isn't racism.  For fark's sake.
