Academic opinion remains divided about whether the famine constitutes a "genocide," with the main question being whether Stalin intentionally wanted to kill Ukrainians as an attempt to quash an independence movement against the Soviet Union, or whether the famine was primarily the result of official incompetence along with natural conditions.

Half of academic opinion can fark right off. Millions of Ukrainian people were starved to death. It doesn't matter what the people responsible were thinking at the time. They died. It was a genocide and the very least that the world can do to provide those victims with the very tiniest bit of justice is to acknowledge that fully rather than to engage in speculation to give intellectual wiggle room to those who deny it.

Watch the 2014 Winter Olympics opening show.
If you follow how they presented Russian history, and saw how Putin watched this like a proud little Mafiya daddy, it is obvious that Putin wants to be remembered in the same breath as Peter the Great and Stalin.

So Putin trying to outdo Stalin's genocide? Utterly unsurprising.
So Putin trying to outdo Peter the Great's willingness to violently suppress dissent or anything that undermines his vision of "Russian greatness"?  Utterly unsurprising.

What is surprising are all the ignorant a**holes who acted surprised on February 24th.
What is horrifying are all the ignorant a**holes who think letting Putin get away with another land-grab is a good thing.

No, there's a wing of of the Catholic Church in America that has nationalist views.  A group of them started an elementary school in my town.  I'm outside of Boston, near the university with the largest Catholic religious education training in America, guided by Jesuits.  Where does this new elementary school recruit its headmaster from?  That bastion of Catholicism and higher education known as Alabama.  The school's website proudly highlights an interview the headmaster gave in The American Conservative magazine.  A magazine which, during the George Floyd riots, said while Trump probably should be doing better there, let's talk about the awesomeness of Trump's recent advisory that all new federal buildings should be built under the classical style!

THIS. I have a few Catholic friends who called previous Popes infallible, and now openly consider this Pope to be too liberal. They say he doesn't represent the church, despite obviously being the top ranking leader of a religion built heavily on the idea of authority.

You're not going to believe this, but two of them are divorced "with no warning" and blame the church for allowing the divorce to happen. They're completely oblivious to the possibility that maybe their wives got tired of being around legalistic authoritarians who never listen.
