I just want to mention how grateful I am for these weekly writers threads. They really helped me endure the Shutdown in a new city, where I knew nobody.

I have also gotten lots of helpful advice and encouragement here.

So, thank you to all the people here who have encouraged me.

Nintenfreak: So I guess I'm officially published now. Hi everyone I'm Alan White I've been here since I was a teenager and I think that this place has helped me grow as a person even though I haven't always been active. I like writing and I wish I did it more often, however life gets in the way and being pork I just sucks and can zap your creativity. Also for some reason open Office keeps crashing every few minutes after I make changes and it doesn't restore the backups like it's supposed to I don't know what's up with that. I've tried pirating Microsoft Office because I refuse to pay a subscription fee for something I could have just bought. But it didn't end up working out

Chuck Tingle is the nom de plume of a surrealist satire and erotica writer who has achieved success, notoriety, and two Hugo award nominations. His 'Tinglers' are short stories generally available on Amazon and feature every conceivable element in the entire spectrum of sexuality, to include Space Raptors, Unicorns, Brexit, Tide Pods, the concept of linear time, business strategy and strategic targeted marketing, and leftover chocolate chip cookies. There's an entire series of erotica based on pounding from the physical manifestations of concepts. You get the picture.

Due to his anonymity, it's not easy to judge his success in terms of sales. He's stated $60,000 as his total earnings, but he also claims he's a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has a PhD in holistic massage from DeVry, which doesn't offer such a program. He does, however, regularly break the Amazon top 100 for his Tinglers, and considering that erotica is one of the highest selling categories in self-publishing, he's probably doing all right.

Part of his character as performance art revolves around what we wouldn't call . . . 'good writing,' in that punctuation or capitalization are optional, and much of what he posts on Twitter is a few degrees off of expected so it's sometimes a rough read. He does however offer free downloads of some of his works, and those show a clear, readable prose that may not win stylistic awards on its own but is absolutely serviceable and doesn't get in the way of the story.

Whatever you might think about his public statements and persona, you have to admit that he is a master of creating, producing, and marketing his work. He creates his own covers, has his son as an editor, and self-publishes completely without external assistance. He's found a completely unique niche and filled it, and since we're talking about Chuck Tingle all our minds collectively went into the gutter with that last sentence. Let's move on.

This article lists . . . some advice on writing, and other things, from Chuck Tingle.

1.drink chocolate milk buddy not that sick water throw that out
2.you are important and so is your way. this is already a story that can be told
3.the void is not worth your curiostiy
4.listen to your buds
5.there is something to learn from traditional horseplay and there is something to be learned from modern trots. respect both
6.dont try to tell people what art is you will always be wrong
7.there is not very much that separates you from a big timers sometimes it is hard work and sometimes it is luck but its almost never talent
8.spend time with your family
9.have gratitude if you dont youll look like a goofball and youll feel like one too
10.prove love always

In terms of technical advice on craftsmanship, it's not nearly the list of tips and tricks for streamlined Amazon publishing that I'd hope for, but I suspect that there's something in here that we can all learn from, if we just sit down with a glass of chocolate milk and think it through.

Writer's Thread Question of the week!

What tips and tricks have you learned about publishing lately?

After all the Fark jokes finally spent 3 bucks to see what the punchline was.

Not disappointed.

"4,500 words of blossoming platonic friendship between buds, including learning about each other, sharing a fun dinner with a box of chocolates as an appetizer, and riding a Ferris wheel at night without a shred of romance"

This.

Libre Office is amazing. It can be a bit of a learning curve with the layouts for tools in the spreadsheet vs Excel, but it's very stable, capable, and doesn't feel cheap.

Also, unless you have some very rare, uncommon hardware that demands Windows, or even OS X/macOS depending upon the age of the equipment, Ubuntu should be your first choice for an operating system. Just make sure you perform the initial installation with a wired Ethernet connection.

I just received my copy of the FFA so I can brandish iat about at Thanksgiving Dinner tomorrow.

Amusingly, my story came about exactly one year ago at Thanksgiving Dinner; I got into a conversation with another guest, which ended with me saying "I can probably turn that into a story."

This weekend I go to the SF Con, Chessiecon, where I can wave it about some more.

I'm just here to correct Subby.  There are multiple subjects of the sentence, so you should use "do" not "does" to describe their collective behavior.

"What tips and tricks have you learned about publishing lately? "

Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction accept online submissions. You have to format it as if you wrote it on a typewriter. Read the rules.

Regarding relationships and chocolate, I went to a good bakery and bought a chocolate croissant for my GF yesterday. You should have seen the look on her face.

I'm looking into Kindle Vella for kicks at the moment. It may be good to get word out about my work, but I doubt I'll  make much money from it. Does anyone here know anything about Kindle Vella? It sounds like a mixed bag, but I'm curious.

I interview well known horror writers for The Horror Zine. I've learned to try to not go all fangirl over them, but sometimes I can't avoid it. The cool thing is I get to interview people I've admired for years, sometimes decades. I recently met Joe Lansdale at a con and it was glorious. He's one of my favorite writers. I want to interview him now!

I've also learned (again) to resubmit a rejected story almost as soon as it's rejected. If I'm patient, it finds a home. My story "Willful Child" now appears in Aphelion Web Zine after multiple rejections elsewhere. It's about the demon Asmodeus and his bratty teenaged daughter. The story is a free read. Here's the link if you want to check it out.

I'm also bragging about my story in the 2022 Fark Fiction anthology. My family can't avoid it! Sure beats talking about politics and religion at Thanksgiving dinner. I'll keep getting the word out about it.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

World's Greatest Author man name of Dr Chuck Tingle is a true buckaroo who trots many timelines to prove love is real, but I don't think he's ever claimed shapeshifting ability and would never use them to rub on a devil full of void crabs and ooze.

He just writes FAST.

Nintenfreak: Noticeably F.A.T.: Nintenfreak: I've been here since I was a teenager and I think that this place has helped me grow as a person

I guess that's better than being raised by Reddit, but still a farking frightening thought.

I've found farkers are generally better people than most other communities

The fact that we recognize that it's a frightening thought means maybe we're not too far gone. Also sorry for all the bad raising advice. I take full responsibility.

You're good. I just wish I had more foresight when she's in a username. Not that I don't enjoy video games mind you but this is definitely a teenager username

Wenchmaster: Anyone have some advice about self-publishing?

I have twenty short stories I've put together as a 270-page, 127K word collection, but I can't seem to get anyone interested in publishing my writing (except Fark). I need to find a decent editor and someone to do cover art and some way to publish this thing, and I have no idea how to do any of that on my own.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If you're interested, I have the technical know-how to get things up on Amazon, and I have access to a bunch of world class artists who might be willing to do cover art on contract. Considering how reliably you're an anthology submitter I'd be more than happy to do a line edit pass on any manuscript you have and manage the whole KDP stuff if you just want to go on Amazon (although, full disclosure: there are far more knowledgeable people than me even just here on Fark) but sadly I know very little about the promotional or marketing side of things.

Getting a book up for sale on Amazon sounds daunting but it's actually pretty easy. Like a lot of other things, the quality of the end result depends on what you want to put into it. I know the guy who did the cover art for this book, and the guy who did this one, and I bet our resident genius artist who does the Anthology covers now is available too if she has the time. Grab me at editors[nospam-﹫-backwards]noitcifkraf*net and I'll happily tell you everything I know.
