I remember once coming home to find my dad as drunk as an owl with his golfing mates, shucking oysters with a power drill and drinking beer. Guess where the oyster shells and beer bottles went?
Disposals aren't popular in Australia. That was the only place I ever lived that had one. I think the whole notion is kinda gross.

I know I'm not reading something written by a physics expert, but this in tip #1 is just irresponsible for the writer's editor:
"Experts warn against throwing waste down a drain that can't be liquified. Doing so can overheat the blades or cause them to die."
Overheating the blades could cause a fire, especially if you're not running water down the drain. Overheating the motor, would cause it to either trip its breaker, or actually damage the motor itself to the point it dies.
Maybe they were being simple, but the fire hazard seems to carry the greatest consequence, just a much lower likelihood. And calling a plumber for a tripped breaker when you know it was caused by uncle James tossing turkey bones down the drain is stupid.

Garbage disposals should be outlawed, they're nothing but a strain on sewers and treatment systems everywhere. How farking hard is it to toss food into a trash can anyway?

LOL.  I avoid sending solids down my kitchen sink, but eventually it will clog up.

I've seen a combination of spaghetti, rice, and eggshell do this. The motor came to a grinding halt, then sat there and made a buzzing sound. The motor was hot.

After doing a thorough cleaning and examination, we plugged it back in and it didn't on. It had burnt out like a cheap hooker early Saturday morning.

Living in acountry where disposals basically just don't exist... No? I've certainly never seen it happen at least. You have a coarse grate to stop the big stuff, and beyond that it's fat that seems to be the biggest risk.

Ask any plumber, clogs caused by garbage disposals are more common than clogs in sinks without them, they're also more costly to repair. The US is the only country in the world where disposals are common, and many European countries outlaw them, yet they don't seem to have clogging issues as a result of not having them. Scraping a plate off in the trash can is not a terribly difficult thing to do. I've fixed clogs in tubs, typically caused by clogged hair traps, and in toilets, but never once in a kitchen sink that wasn't in the disposal.

Sending food waste down the drain causes an increase in the amount of backups and clogs in sewer lines, along with an increase in solid waste processed by treatment facilities. Solid waste from treatment facilities has to be disposed of in landfills as hazardous waste, requiring special disposal methods that cost significantly more than just standard garbage. So people who have disposals are being subsidized for their laziness by every taxpayer.

Mine does clog on occasion...but it
it is rare.

Thankfully my Mom made sure to tell me to never pour fats down the sink when I was a kid.

Well, then we should consult an attorney to conduct a proper deposition.

A drain snake/auger is a useful piece of household kit, worth having along with a plunger. Very effective at clearing blockages and can save you the cost of a plumber.

Liquefied fat after cooking solidifies at room temperature. I COULD pour molten metal down the drain, too, and it would eventually clog up.

Don't be pouring fats into your sink.

If you farkers are enough fiber you wouldn't have this problem. You'd shiat massive turds, which would disintegrate after flushing.

They're not helpful if the disposer is clogged. The only way to clean it out is to reach in and take whatever's clogging it out. If the motor burned out, the the only thing you can do is replace the whole thing.

And THAT is where the article was wrong.  Human waste, toilet paper and BONGWATER are the only things that should go in the toilet

Our waste disposal company has added bones to the list of "Mixed Organics", so just about everything food related can go in that bin. Bottles go to the Bottledrop, other glass in the "Small bin".

And we installed a line-pressure toilet a couple years ago when we decided to replace the lowboy toilet in the master bedroom suite.  According to the reviews, it can flush a tennis ball. We don't have any grandchildren, so we will take the reviewer's word on that.

I rented an apartment years ago where the lease included a hilariously extensive list of things you were not supposed to put down the disposal. Each item presumably had an incident behind it; the only one I can still remember is "whole pies".

When I was a yoot, we spent one Thanksgiving with our only toilet in the hallway.

After three hours of snaking and flushing, the plumber retrieved a plastic doll's head from the pipes.

He estimated that it had been there 20 years.  But it picked Thanksgiving Day 1977 to obstruct the pipe.

Happy Brown Friday, y'all!

The disposal has a breaker underneath the unit. It's there to keep you from burning out the disposal by putting shiat in it that doesn't belong (bones, large food items, etc.).Once you've got the blades clear of obstructions and the disposal is turning freely, you have to reset the breaker (a small red button on the underside of the unit) by pressing it up, like a GFI receptacle. I've never had to replace a disposal because it burned out, and clients are amazed when it's working again in minutes.

Somewhat coincidentally, we're having a plumber come out on Monday, the earliest they had available. On Sunday the water hose to the toilet in the master bathroom decided snap clean in half just above the shut off valve. Ended up with about an inch of water on the floor while trying to shut it off. Somewhat fortunately, the water all drained into the floor heating duct and then drained from it.
