I see so many stories along these lines and it comes down to, "If we didn't have substandard housing, poor people would have no place they could afford to live." There is something horribly wrong with that very real concept.

Also: criminalizing abortion and child neglect without offering help to overwhelmed single mothers.

This story was bad enough before I got to the part where the state GQP handed people like that bastard Brunner a blank check by destroying the ability of local government to defend poor people from abusers like him.

Same here. Two stories, one of a big white bloke having it all, drifting into white-collar crime step by step, yet being protected by stupid laws, versus generations of women after another struggling through life because they are being kept in a vulnerable state, either deliberately or through ignorance and indifference.
Halfway through it already seems inevitable how it's going to end.

Great link, subby, even though it's heartbreaking.

Great read, subby, even though it's soul-crushing to read in such detail how much the system benefits and protects the rich (especially if they're white )while treating being poor as a crime in itself.

18 years in the pokey for the mother. Fat ass got probation a couple times for all the rentals constantly catching on fire and gets to now blame having a stroke for continued malfeasance. His son is following in Daddy's footsteps and has his own rental properties constantly burning down.

Read it all the way through. Turning away is a disservice to yourself, your community and "our way of life," literally.
There is nothing exceptional about this story, excepting the herculean efforts of its reporting and the depravity and sociopathological, self satisfied arrogance of those willing to justify themselves by any means.
It repeats over and over wherever it can, where there is privilege, poverty, racism, classism, capitalism, corruption and overburdened, underpaid and numb or corruptable public servants.
Ignorant, arrogant esconcement in excess and mutual masturbation cultures with their churches and country clubs by those most fortunate allows perpetuation of the decay and injustice that is dragging so many and so much into decay.
Wake TF up.

Dead Kennedy's - Let's Lynch The Landlord (Lyrics/Slideshow)
Youtube ph70m9qvXZ8

"The Landlord's here to visit
They're blasting disco down below
Says, "I'm doubling up the rent
'Cause the building's condemned
You're gonna help me buy City Hall"
But we can
You know we can
But we can, you know we can
Let's lynch the landlord man
I tell him 'turn on the water'
I tell him 'turn on the heat'
Tells me 'all you ever do is complain'
Then they search the place when I'm not here
But we can
You know we can
But we can
You know we can
Let's lynch the landlord
Let's lynch the landlord
Let's lynch the landlord man
There's rats chewin' up the kitchen
Roaches up to my knees
Turn the oven on, it smells like Dachau, yeah
Till the rain pours through the ceiling
But we can
You know we can
But we can
You know we can
Let's lynch the landlord
Let's lynch the landlord
Let's lynch the landlord man
The landlord man"

Much of Milwaukee was mixed racially and working class untill the interstate and GI bill

The GI bill let white soldiers buy homes in better areas and get degrees starting the process of generating intergenerational wealth. Black soldiers were locked out How the GI Bill's Promise Was Denied to a Million Black WWII Veterans

The interstate and highways were built to purposely split Milwaukee racially

Thanks to union jobs and manufacturing there was some opportunity for the African American community but with the shipping of factories overseas they lost that and thanks to not having the same access to housing they weren't able to create generational wealth wiping out any gains

Milwaukee is one of the most segregated cities in America

It leads to a lot of racists policies and continuing echos of the choices made in the 1940s and 50s

Thus why a gerrymandered GOP statehouse would work so hard to make sure the little guy has no rights, cause not only are they the little guy, they are often black, native, Hmong, or what they consider other

the saddest part about stories like this is that for every 1 that is published, there are hundreds thousands of unpublished ones that are similar, if not even worse. people suck, the system sucks, and there are no simple answers. hug your loved ones and give thanks.

Great article subby.
The story highlights the two separate systems of justice, and the failure of society to protect these kids.
Hey, at least the dead beat white guy was able to drive a Rolls Royce home after taking his cigarette boat out on the water.
And yeah, not paying federal or state taxes, local taxes, fines, etc should have been a big problem for Brunner, the slumlord.

You know who else engaged in illegal landlord behavior, didn't pay their taxes, and avoided all prosecution for numerous crimes?

And just think- with Roe going down there will be lots more poor mothers for slumlords to rent to, and if we decriminalize victimless crimes like tax evasion and fraud by landlords we'll have enough jail cells for the evil neglectful parents!

So mom has a couple kids with a couple different dudes, beats the hell out of the kids and leaves them alone for days at a time, and the story is that the landlord is a bad landlord?

Clearly she was stunning and brave in the face of adversity.

Or something....

In my early 20's, I was an "account manager" for a rent-to-own place, basically a installer/repo man for couches, fridges, and TVs/VCRs etc.

I will never forget the things I saw.

No, one of the kids failed to attain adulthood.

Cuz they literally beat it to death.

Because of the landlord.

I think you are conflating the woman the story is about, Angelica Belen, with her mother Dawn Sosa.

2022-11-23 10:00:38 AM
So this is local news here, none of this is really new.

Here we have the life stories of two different people and the very, very bad thing that happened when they intersected, but that's not quite the point of the thing.

What you have to remember is that the people of the state outside of the city (and this is probably true of most states, not just here) really want the city and all of its broken people and all of its problems to just go away. And they have elected a legislature that agrees with this mindset, which does not see the idea of babysitting adults through their lives as a valid function of government.

So both of these people lived their lives as they saw fit, only being forced to interact with various branches of city and state government when they screwed up enough to get someone's attention, but those agencies are siloed and don't talk to one another enough to assemble an overarching picture of the problems these people have in the way this article did.

That looks like a very, very hard problem to fix even if all involved had the will to do so, and even that is in short supply around here.

I wish I did. Excellent journalism but it'll make your blood boil.

The best take away is Belen and Brunner physically became who they really were. If you read the book Swan Song, almost in the same way.

Belen looked good in unfortunately-still-in-prison picture. She looks like the better person she describes that she's become.

Brunner looks like a visual representation of a few of the seven deadly sins.

not gonna give this any more time beyond this response, but my point here is that if your takeaway from this story is that it was simply to argue that "the landlord is a bad landlord" then you've failed at reading comprehension (among countless other things, I can assume).

this is not a matter of me "not liking what you have to say" so much as it being an indictment of your massive misreading of this article.

I think TFA confirmed that our tax system is utterly broken.  You have this idiot and #45 flaunting the already weak, low tax rate on passive income and facing no serious consequences.  Both of them need to be arrested for tax evasion at the least and have their and their shell company and or trust property liquidated by the IRS and both need to face prison time proportional to a middle class person for failing to report their income (a side hustle, inheritance, or gambling/crypto income).
Instead they are allowed to simply opt out of payment.
BTW, I had some relatively small stock option income for two years, and the IRS fined me $50 for failing to file quarterly and more or less accused me of being a tax dodger.  I paid 50% tax on the short term CG on the stonks, in February well ahead of the April 15th deadline.  That's proportionally a much higher penalty that TFG or the TFA idiot.

As a country, enough of us don't care about a classroom full of dead children.
You think most of us care about a poor single mom living in appalling conditions?

We don't. That people continue to be broken and thrown away, that mass shootings occur weekly now, is an illustration that millions of people don't have a problem with it. They just don't. "fark you I got mine" is our national motto now. Well, has been for a long time, but it's time we acknowledged it.

The only thing some people care about is money and those people get the bulk of protection here. Money has more rights than people. It's obvious. We should stop pretending otherwise and greet with contempt and ridicule any attempt to suggest otherwise.

Read it all, just a farking brutal article, no one comes off as a decent human in that piece, they don't pull punches on the single mom either, noting how she had family who offered help and refused who even testified against her in court.  Just horrible, but the worst people are truly the landlord and the prosecutor/judge who just let that MFer walk time and time again while giving the mom the worst sentence I have ever farking heard of for child neglect.

The summation at the end where the reporter snaps photos of the wealthy toys (cigarette boat, Rolls Royce) the landlord has managed to buy back from state auctions all while being considered indigent are just the shiat icing to the turd cake that is this story.
