Subby's headline makes it sound like the dog led the hunter into the icy river....

Harry Freakstorm: They never have to rescue gatherers.  Just want to point that out.

Because they die of poisonous mushrooms before anyone can get to them?

My grandfather went hunting every season almost daily from Oct 15 to the last day of January right up until the day he died at 88 yrs of age. He was in a group of men who had leased around 9500 acres back in the 1950s and kept it til present day. He would hop on a atv and ride way back into the woods....alone...and hunt. The day he died he came home because my grandmother had used the cb to tell him to come eat lunch. He ate and sat in his chair to nap and never woke up. Im thankful he had just done his 2 favorite things. Hunt and eat lunch with my grandmother and not been laying up in assisted living or something.

He had fallen into the river three times.

You're not here for the hunting, are you?

LesserEvil: My Dad is 80 years old, and went on a week long hunting trip in northern Michigan, and I have not heard from him in the past few days, so before getting more than halfway into the article, I was getting a kick....

My Mom passed away last year, so when I got to the part about "wife reported her husband had..." I felt a bit of relief.

I hope I can be as active as my Dad at that age. He goes fishing one or two times a week, plants a full garden, shovels the driveway...

Just an update.... my 80-year old Dad got back yesterday, no luck on bagging a buck, but it's as much about hanging out with family and the friends that have shared the same hunting grounds for decades.

I wish I could join him, but cancer (and the radiation treatment) has mostly killed my right eye's optic nerve, so I don't shoot any more, and I'm not investing a crazy amount of money (or time and energy) into making things work, just to go hunting once a year. I'm not a gun nut, but I was good enough  to consider joining the Marine Corps competitive shooting team when I was enlisted.

Why is it "Fark:" that he was 80. Because it's an irrelevant detail?

That area is replete with geezers. He probably is home from Florida for hunting and Turkey day.

How many 80-year old hunters do you know? Especially ones that go hunting in winter-ish Michigan.

I don't know if that area got hit hard with snow, but the west side of the state got 12+ inches and it is still coming.
