chose to use us because we are, in reality, the largest and most effective ticket seller in the world

No, you have monopoly-level power across most venues and require people ticketing them to use your parent company. You deserve to be antitrusted into oblivion.

I guess she's too popular.. well, definitely more popular than whatever weirdos they have running that scam.

Dude made some very good factual points. And ticketmaster needs to die or have more competition. It feels like to me that they are in cahoots with the resellers and I don't know why anyone would defend that - certainly no one but scalpers.

I honestly think one way to solve it is to make tickets non-transferable. That would invite a host of new problems but I do think it would solve the biggest issue here, which is basically fully auotomatted scalping.

2022-11-17 4:03:09 PM
The problem is the only people against this monopoly are a portion of the ticket buyers, with some annoyance from sellers who aren't able to collect that sweet scalper premium.

It wouldn't be particularly technically difficult to have every venue run its own ticket system, and sell tickets tied to ID you'd have to present to get in.  Nobody wants to to that because A) it would take some effort and B) Ticketmaster would crush the venue.

I used to work for a small company that had been recently acquired by Ticketmaster. It was many years ago, but they were already famously exploitative - the Pearl Jam Incident was not too much earlier.

As bad as everyone knew they were, they were objectively worse to employees.

They have always had legit technical challenges with surges of activity that few other businesses have ever faced, but it's hard to understand how they've not been able to turn their very generous fees into internet platforms that can handle it smoothly.

UPDATE: Ticketmaster has announced that the general-public ticket sales for Taylor Swift's Eras tour, set to begin tomorrow, has been "cancelled." It's not clear whether that means the tickets are all sold out or whether Ticketmaster is just attempting to shy away from the backlash that greeted the early sales, but anyone still scrambling to get those tickets might now be shiat out of luck.

That'll definitely garner some goodwill for them.

no it isn't - it's because they don't have to.  the fact that they own stubhub should be a monopoly case but whaddya gonna do?

I tried. I genuinely wanted to grab 2 tickets for my wife and I (she's a huuuge fan) but I was going to flip those other four, since you had a  six ticket limit. Yeah, yeah, the problem is me. Don't hate the playa, hate the capitalism that allows raw exploitation.

If she cared about her fans and not the money, she'd tell them to illegally download her original recordings to get back at the label head who tried to sabotage her career instead of rewriting history by releasing albums of re-records that don't sound the same as the originals. She's nearly 35 - her voice isn't what it was at 17.

No one in their right mind would do that. That's a great way to get slapped with a lawsuit. Pretty much only Weird Al can get away with doing something like that, and that only worked because distribution of the Roku service is patchy at best.

/Also, she sounds better now than she did then. Which is normal for most singers.

Do you know of any artist that re-recorded their own music to receive more airplay for the re-record than the original (besides the digitally-altered recording of Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" with his daughter's vocals added to it)? It doesn't happen, because people associate an artist's music with their original recordings. TS knows this. She'd rather have her masters back than re-record all her albums. She just doesn't want to finance Scooter Braun in any way.

I'm sick of people trying to canonize Tay-Tay. Despite what people think, her shiat stinks too.

Seriously? They're lots of remasters, concert versions, remixes, and other reissues, all different from the original. "Blue Monday", the best-selling 12" single of all time (and for damn good reason) for example, has three different studio versions, and people argue over which is better, to say nothing of concert versions, collaborations, and the time Bernard Summer guested with the Killers.

And Elvis? Elvis and early rock artists did constant reissues. So did jazz musicians. Remaking and rerecording was very, very common.

Also, again, telling people to torrent songs would absolutely result in a lawsuit from Scooter, who has just as deep pockets as she does.

As of November 2022, Taylor Swift's net worth is $400 Million,

Last time I went to a concert was in September. Had an unrelated errand in Madison, so as long as I was going to be in town, I bought a seat to a performance of Beethoven's 9th before I left. Plenty of open seats.

No hassle for a better musical experience.
