This Irish guy digs up a potato, and being drunk, doesn't realize its only a rock.
His family says nothing. You don't point out daddy's failures.
Damned thing lasted all winter in the stew pot.

Not sure I understand the reference. Wasn't the famine 200 years after Cromwell?

Yes, but Cromwell on his own managed to start a famine in Ireland. Maybe that's what subby was going for

Hush dear, it's hard enough to get Americans to read British history at all.

That's John Russell you want, Subby. Cromwell shot, stabbed, and hanged people, he didn't starve anyone.

I didn't know much about Irish history until we visited a few years ago. I started reading a bit and I learned why so many Irish hate the British.

There was plenty of food in Ireland during the "famine", just not for the poor Irish. Lots of food was exported to England while the Irish were taught a moral lesson by their betters in London.

Learn about what happened if you are interested. A good place to start is:

It happened in India too. Several times during the 1800s. And ditto why the Indians hated the British so much.

The British were big on Adam Smith capitalism and John Calvin work ethic. Bad combination for a government when crisis hiats.

Maybe they'd be easier to harvest if they used something other that a giant fork.

How many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman?

Zero.

People like Charles Trevelyan don't get the same reaction as Cromwell.

Although I've never understood why; they killed a lot more Irish people than Cromwell could've shot if he'd stayed there twenty years.

I don't think there's a corner of Britain or Ireland who still supported him at the end  when he tried to name his son as successor. He'd pissed off the Scots, suppressed the Catholic North maybe worse than the Stuarts, and alienated rank and file Protestants in the South.

Cromwell was an absolute bastard and one of the bravest SOB's to get into a fight. Moral is- it's not the cowards you need to watch out for- it's the bloody heroic types who've never given a thought to the possibility they might be wrong. Ironic, considering his words to the Scottish protestants.
