I feel compelled to point out that the Mets didn't necessarily say this, nor did Mets ownership. SNY, who broadcasts the Mets, reported that Mets people said this. And SNY is still owned by the Wilpons, who are the previous Mets owners and famously bitter grumps.

It seems weird that they would say they "wouldn't outbid" for Judge, instead of simply saying they're not in the market for him.

That is the only thing that may save the Mets from trouble.   Everyone remembers the mid-'80s when owners colluded to limit FA salaries by refusing to sign a shiatload of big name players.   During discovery, the MLBPA found all kinds of communications by the owners clearly stating that their intention to try to void the new CBA and bring baseball back to the pre-free agency days.

This isn't the same at all, but owners now and then are their own worst enemies.
