Why bother using our tens-of-billions in quarterly profits to develop more lines-of-business and renewable energy tech that we could profit from when we can just spend hundreds-of-millions maintaining the status quo?

If I was an investor, I'd seriously question their willingness to ignore a new potential revenue stream that added long-term viability to the portfolio.

If Elon Musk has taught us anything this last month, it's that business men aren't nearly as smart, skilled, or adaptable as they'd like us to believe.

Whenever I go on a tear about capitalism, there's almost always one person that's like "well what you replace it with? Capitalism is the only system that works!"

And I'm just like... Does it tho? 'Cause like, we're staring down the barrel of a man-made extinction event and we're hard pressed to do anything about it because it may adversely affect some ghoul's bottom lines. Like, I cannot stress the direness of this situation here.

You don't need much to dupe the Asbury Park Press, just wave a dollar bill over the heads of the few journalists that still remain in that broken firm.

Resigning ourselves to climate disasters and ecological collapse because some folks are too lazy for substantial systemic change.

There are lots of different flavors of capitalism. Nordic-style stakeholder/socialist capitalism? Pretty rad, I think. American-style "fark you get mine" Friedman capitalism? Signs point to 'no'.

Otherwise we just get into the infinity+ argument where capitalism is only corpo-fascist dystopia and socialism is only a soviet hellhole and let's be honest that's pretty boring.

Plenty of industries and products within capitalism are regulated or illegal.  Capitalism can exist and at the same time fossil fuel use can be discouraged through taxation and regulation.   Your capitalist government has effectively cut the number of cigarettes sold in half over the last 20 years through taxation and regulation.

Discoveries and innovations arose before capitalism was conceived. Discoveries and innovations will still arise after capitalism is gone.

The social sciences, such as economics, have been wrongly belittled to the point where arguing out of ignorance is seen as equally sound.

Hence, why many people are led to think that those who lucked their way into wealth, such as Musk and Trump, are supposedly more informed about economics than actual economists.

Apples, meet oranges.

I personally do what I can. My power comes from a local solar co-op, I barely drive anywhere, I don't fly, my meat is produced locally from my clients I barter with, etc.

What I am not going to do, however, is worry myself to the point of sickness over stuff I have no control over. I am just one person. I am not a multinational corporation with pollution as a major byproduct.

Capitalism is great - but it needs reasonable regulations that history has shown us to be appropriate.

Even Adam Smith acknowledged both this, and the responsibility of capitalism's "winners" to give back to those it exploits.

Institutional investors should definido that. Individual investors would want to see quarterly gains. But they have no say about a company's goings on.

Economics is not a social science. It's part of the liberal arts at most universities, with a few making it a business degree, and for a good reason. It's basically some kid making up a chart and then using that crayon chart to justify selling their younger sibling for parts.

Quit trying to sell economics, it's just the rubber stamp that capitalism operates under.

Apparently the really big investors, primarily institutional, don't like to ask questions. I read about that the other day in an article about the small investor suing Tesla for handing Elon Musk stock options one year that eventually amounted to $56 billion. The investor rightfully says they had no farking business whatsoever handing the CEO so much compensation. So where are all the big institutional investors that should be filing suit and could bring the lawyers needed to take on Tesla?  They're saying nothing for fear of jeopardizing their access to corporate boards.
