I do still think that Don Shula was as good a coach as there's ever been, in any sport.

I'm not taking anything away from the 72 Dolphins- undefeated is undefeated.

But in Week 3, they beat the Vikings by 2, and in Week 6 they beat the Bills by 1. In a 14-game regular season, 2 drives were the difference between Very Good and Legendary.

1948 Cleveland Browns and 1948 Calgary Stampeders would like a word.

No idea if it's true, but I heard/read the other day that something like 20 plays over the course of a season separate playoff teams from the bottom of the barrel record wise. Or something like that.

The last time I looked at it, an NFL team averages something like 12 drives per game. Even the historically godawful teams- I'm talking the 0-16 Lions and 0-16 Browns- each needed a handful of third down stops throughout the season to go from making history to just being bad. Or an offensive conversion to go their way, or whatever. The 2017 Browns lost two games in OT- one play in either of those games goes a different way, and we think of that team as merely not good.

Like Crash Davis says in Bull Durham- the difference between batting .250 and .300 over the course of an MLB season is one hit a week. The difference between a golfer being a millionaire and a scrub is about a putt a round. At the highest levels, the margins are paper-thin.
