This exact thing happened in a game I was playing several years ago, where visiting players would drop "illegal" items to try to get the host banned. I forget which game though.

I initially thought, from the headline, that hackers could hack you through items. That would be interesting.

People are just being dicks as usual.

For some people, the only enjoyment comes from ruining the game for others.

If people are getting banned for picking up shiat that others dropped in game, then the problem isn't with the droppers it's with the stupid system that allows this to even happen.

That reminds me of getting into a players pants.

In DIKUMUD, which I programmed content for, you could do all kinds of stuff with other players inventories. Like picking up poop, and then simply write "give poop [player]", with them not paying attention, they'd soon be overburdened, and find their pants/inventory, was full of crap.

As a highlevel char, ie. God mode, I could also give players NPCs, like a dragon. Carrying a dragon around would make you overburdened, taking the dragon out of your inventory would be suicide.

Though of course, if you found yourself with a dragon in your inventory, you might as well take it out as a party trick when other people where in the same [room].

The problem being they can't directly minitor what 3rd party websites do. It's either all or nothing. You could pay for someone to show up and drop stuff. And they would never know you are cheating. So blanket ban on hacked stuff.

*LAUGHS IN GTAV:ONLINE*

Apparently a recent update by Rockstar either necessitated or resulted in the removal of 95% of the anti-cheat system in place (LOL).

There's tons of modders in GTAV:Online, but they're not all malicious, and I don't know of any accounts that have been banned because of them, but I feel ya, Elden Ring players, I feel ya.

Yeah, people who do this shiat say exactly that.

I don't play the game but if I did and I picked something up that seemed legit and then I got banned for it instead of the person who did the dropping, I'd be pissed.

Nah. It really is on the company to fix this. They're the ones heavily encouraging online play, and forcing PC players to install invasive anti-cheat software. I can kind of understand giving From a pass on obtuse and shiatty game design, but if you're going to all but force online play you need to make sure it's as secure as possible.

"Fix your sh*t" is not a pass to be a dick.

Players can't fix the game's sh*t.  What players can do is not be dicks.

Don't be a dick.

Interesting to see just how thick From's anti-criticism armor is. I really don't get it. There's an exploit that's been getting innocent players banned, and your solution is "Hey! Stop it now, I mean it!"

If that was my solution to bugs in my software I wouldn't have a job.

xalres: Dark Souls III?

And DSII, and DSI, and DSI:R. Honestly I'd thought they'd patched the problem by now.

As long as most of their fans genuinely don't care, why would they?

Its like not storing all player data for save files on the host server only leads to problems exactly like this

Its almost like there are parts of wow you should always  copy

My account for GTAVO was suspended after a hacker made it rain money - I earned too much money too fast and an auto suspension kicked in.

Note: I've been in sessions where beneficent hackers / moders have done the "rain cash" thing, but the time that led to a suspension the drops were considerably faster, so I assume it was intentional.
