So, the babies are likely doomed because they will  get the herpes from their parents who are known carriers. But their death ordeal may help to find a cure.
Since 1995, there have been over fifty documented disease cases in North America and Europe, of which only nine have been successfully cured.

Considering elephant gestation is normally 22 months.  but could go longer..
