I've been to Amsterdam a couple of times (with my wife I might add) and the Red Light district is kind of boring - think of a few terraced streets with a girl wriggling around in a window and you've basically gotten the picture. Go into the building and you can pay and have sex, otherwise walk past. I'm not sure the rationale for changing what it is right now for anyone.

before the Covid shut down the locals were trying to get it shut down because of things the tourists would do. the Covid down spike in the area changed the shut it all down mentality a bit. they want the money and none of the mess.

It seems like what very little "charm" the place has would be completely destroyed by any significant changes to the district.

Though it makes me wonder if there's an ulterior motive.  Empty-out the existing buildings, tear them down, and either don't rebuild, or do like they did with the Boston West End, where the new construction was unaffordable to the former residents that had been forced out to make way for the redevelopment.

I walked around the red light district a few times.  The girls in the windows are kinda of meh.  Think strung out Eastern Europeans and a lot of larger gals.  I did not partake.

Lovely country, but if you're a Westerner there's a good chance you're going there for sex tourism and paying to see a woman launch ping pong balls from her vagina is about the most benign thing a sex tourist might do.

It's the underage stuff that's seriously problematic.

Fun fact: being both socially awkward as well as a delivery driver, I have only ever *received* tips from sex workers and strippers. Most of them tip pretty well, as with other working-class folks who understand the true value of a dollar.

There's also a strip club in the area that only gives out $2 bills (inflation, motherf*cker!), so occasionally I will get paid entirely in twos. It's kinda neat!

The Philippines has (or had) something similar when I was there in the 80's. They would place coins on the top of a bottle, lower themselves onto said bottle then, spit coins at the crowd.

This suites the target client, it's a step above hookers in the street but not high class escorts you pay to keep quiet.  Every market has different segments.

Think of it like shirts.  Some people buy them at the dollar store, step up and you have walmart then target, department store all the way up to $2000 Loro Piana t-shirts from sax 5th Ave

The red light district is walmart, Nevada is closer to target or khols where you feel better about it and the $1k an hour "escort" is paid to not tell anyone you were there.

I visited Amsterdam in April.

What a great city. Completely unaffordable, but incredible to visit and walk through.

What's also remarkable are the Keukenhof Gardens, outside of Amsterdam. Absolutely glorious. But only open from late March to mid-May.

Back in the 90s it was much bigger and sleazier.  Drug deals out on the street.  Pros on the street and in windows.  Pretty much from Newkirk to the left as you exit the train station to Dam Square.
In the early 2000s it became gentrified and a lot of the old district is now jazz bars and condos.

Been a long time since I heard anyone mention the West End, which I guess back in the olden times was a place so raunchy, the Navy guys like going there when on shore leave.

I assumed what Amsterdam is trying to do is more like what happened in Boston's Combat Zone. Full of Adult entertainment which was driven out by gentrification. Unfortunately, that gentrification is also causing nearby Chinatown to become unaffordable to live in, and are driving out the residents to places outside of Boston.

Ultra-Catholic. Over 80% of Filipinos identify as Catholic.
But it's kinda complicated.
For example; gay and transgender folks are common place, and accepted in society. But same sex marriage is illegal.
Birth control is broadly available. But abortion is banned completely.
And there are only seven ways to get a divorce.
