The "secret" is that they might say yes if the seat you are offering is better than the one they have.

There, now you don't have to read the dumb article.

'When we booked this flight, it wouldn't let us select our seats for some reason, so my family wasn't sitting together. 'When we got to the gate, we tried to get them to see if they could move us around and they couldn't.'

Then you shouldn't have booked that flight. Maybe try another website, or a different flight next time. I mean, who the fark books a flight when they cant get their kids seats next to them?

I would switch, but only if the person asking has a better seat AND is willing to pay me a convenience fee - something along the lines of $100 cash.  When the chick in the article says "it wouldn't let us select our seats for some reason,"  I can bet that the reason is she was unwilling to pony up extra cash to be able to specify what seats she wanted.  Paying me just reinforces the concept that you get what you pay for.

Yes, just DON'T. Not long ago I was using SW airlines for a flight home. I have a condition known as DVT, makes me vulnerable to blood clots in my leg (I take medication for this). I made sure I got a low boarding number so I could pick an aisle seat, which I did.

The plane was just about full of passengers when 2 stragglers boarded. One of the guys took a B line towards me, finally asking for my seat because he has issues with blood clots, needs an aisle seat.  Me: I also have DVT, am currently wearing a Rx compression stocking, take your case elsewhere. Seeya.

Was this something in a travel article after COVID "ended?" I swear this is a new trend that I've only been hearing about in the last 2 years.

A lot of airlines make you pay to reserve seats. I spent money on top of the ticket for this seat, because it was desirable to me. As others have said, you aren't getting my seat unless it's an upgrade for me.

Things that are an upgrade: More legroom/better class seat. A seat that is the same size as my seat, but closer to the front of the plane so I have less of a wait getting off
Things that are NOT an upgrade: Giving me the middle seat instead of the window seat that I chose. A seat next to the bathroom

Delta tried seating our 11 year old away from my wife and I - we told them the FAA does not agree, they told us "sorry, don't care."  90 seconds later the agent called me to the desk and handed us new boarding passes, seated together.

issued 7/22:
The Office of Aviation Consumer Protection (OACP) has issued a notice urging U.S. airlines to do everything in their power to ensure that children who are age 13 or younger are seated next to an accompanying adult with no additional charge.

Now you don't have to read the stupid "article."

My wife & I had separate seats on a flight - don't remember how or why. But the guy next to her was willing to swap with me - definitely moving him forward, probably to my aisle seat. That's not always a real upgrade if you've got anything stored overhead and can't move that up with you.

When the drink service came around, I asked the crew to offer him a drink on me. It seemed like the christian thing to do, but she said she'd never heard of such a thing but thought it was a great idea.

The next surprise was that he declined an adult beverage but picked some kind of snack bundle.

Years ago I was traveling with my wife and daughter.  My ticket was work purchased and theirs were on our dime.

We ended up with middle seat on one row, and an aisle and window in another.  My wife took the middle, and my daughter and I took the aisle/window.  We attempted to swap with the guy in the middle.  But he refused.  He could have had a window, or an aisle.  But instead, rode middle for 3 hours.

Can you elaborate about what happened during the 90 seconds? That OACP notice sounds pretty toothless, like when they ask grocery stores/gas stations/ISPs to pretty please with sugar on top charge people less. Works real well

Article is from England.  They probably Brexited themselves out of that kind of regulation.

I've gained from that once on a trip to Shanghai, for much the same reason. A guy was in business class, I was in economy sat next to his family. Happily traded for a larger seat with an empty between me and someone else. The return back in economy sucked.

This is stupid. Airlines created this problem when they decided to squeeze more money by selling window/aisle seats on top of the cost of the ticket. Before, it would mostly happen if you booked at last minute or were a stand-by passenger which in those cases is completely understandable you get most likely separated of your love ones.

When I was a kid with divorced parents, I flew across the country numerous times by myself (well, in a plane...and with other people). It all went fine and I hardly ever got molested. I guess I don't see the big deal about having your kid sitting 10 feet away instead of 1 foot away. It's not like they're going to wander off.

With that said, airlines should try to keep parents & kids together if they can, and without BS fees or hassle.

I can't elaborate as I was out of earshot of the agents but my assumption is because we were nice about it they decided that out of 300 seats they could probably get 2 together (wife and I don't care if we're together, just that one of us is with the kid.)
