As it said in that lovely (counter-) pamphlet (also) put in my mailbox circa 88-89, "you reap what you sow."

The overall trend of the GOP running candidates whose only skill is taking is troublesome. Lake, Sanders, Trump, Oz, etc. These aren't politicians, they're propagandists.

Both of those cannot be true simultaneously, I don't care if he is the Democrat.

Why?

You're making the same biased assumptions you accuse Christians of.

You see "Baptist" and assume racist, science-denying, woman-hating fundamentalist, without knowing anything further. Alternatively, you see "MIT-educated scientist" and think liberal, rational, religion-denying, tolerant atheist.

People are much more complicated than the boxes you want to file them in.

Behold the power of propaganda.
Getting folks to vote against their own best interests
All for culture war ideals
Still no healthcare, schools, and a living standard slowly sinking towards third world status
But God forbid there's a drag show at the library
Or those dangerous books on the shelves.

Or rather, language is a lot more fungible for laypersons than we would hope. A religious person is, by definition, not a scientist.

Nothing in the definition of "religion" bars a belief in "science" except here on Fark. This is the only place I know of where they are mutually exclusive and in fact people will tell you to your face "oh, you believe in a god? That means you hate women/blacks/equal rights/believe the earth is flat" or whatever else is under discussion at the moment.

But you go right on thinking that if it keeps your world rotating, dear.

Sorry but, in my experience, if someone tells you they're Baptist, it's pretty safe to assume they're racist, science-denying, woman-hating fundamentalists. You'd be correct about 80% of the time.

I'll agree with you though, that "MIT-educated scientist" doesn't necessarily mean liberal. I've known at least a few scientists who I'm pretty sure are Trumpers now.

Well, she's not qualified for anything else.
Heck AR has enough former football players opening up car dealerships.
What else is left other than a buffet restaurant or nail salon and the Koreans have that market sewn up.

mistahtom: Hey remember when she didn't do her job at the whitehouse for over a farking YEAR

Her public-facing position made it a little easier, but let's be honest.  Almost nobody at the White House was doing their job that year.  The guy who had to keep talking Trump out of nuking North Korea, maybe, but almost nobody else.  Technically I don't think that counts as a White House position, but you get my point.

I am unclear where the "baptist" thing comes from, exactly. I can't find a mention of that anywhere.

In 1845, the Baptist movement in the US splits over the slavery issue. You can guess which side of the schism the melanin-blessed where on. Now, the oldest black Baptist church, the First Missionary Baptist Church of Little Rock was established soon after. "Missionary" is both another splinter group, plus a way of denoting their blackness because it can be somewhat embarrassing to walk into a white Baptist church when they're sewing klan robes and eating ice cream.
