(The Verge)   Rip Van Edwards, who claims to be a tech reporter, just discovered AirTags. Did you Farkers know they can be used to give peace of mind about luggage location? That's some mighty fine journalism keeping up with new technologies   (theverge.com) divider line

Is this the thread where we get super angry that people use AirTags because some assholes might theoretically abuse them?

No. This is the thread where I feel good that I am not as much of an out of touch, ignorant, luddite, GenXer as some thinkle peep I am.

I may be the last person on Earth to realize you can use trackers to keep track of things, but I have to admit the premise is solid.

It certainly does say something when writing an informative article to admit at the start that you assume that everyone already knows everything that you're about to tell them.

With AirTags your luggage can still disappear. It can still be mishandled and lost. And telling the airline exactly where it's at will be zero help because they don't care one bit.

Likwit: Is this the thread where we get super angry that people use AirTags because some assholes might theoretically abuse them?

Actually has that happen to a friend of a friends cousin and the only reason I say its real is cause my friend called me to go and help his friends cousin and ensure she got to her car safely.

Long story short, she flew into my city and was going to drive home the next day. Her car was not parked at the airport but instead some random place downtown thanks to some app called Spothero that saved her 10s of dollars in parking fees.

She gets checked into her hotel room that night and her Iphone picks up a an unknown airtag in her luggage. Panic and what not ensues.

I end up picking her up from the hotel and driving her to her car the next day and all was well.

So do I think air tags are evil ?  No but can they potentially be used for it ? Sure, although Apple and Samsung have pretty good safety features these days hence why her phone found it even though she wasn't searching for it.

AirTags won't save you when you're being buried alive by your husband. Neither will Apple watch but still.

Someone had to take over Ric Romero's gig since he retired.
