(Vice)   Those two guys who got trapped in a South Korean zinc mine for nine days managed to survive on 30 packets of instant coffee and what do you know, they came out in pretty good shape. Coffee, is there nothing it can't do?   (vice.com) divider line

But can we live in a World Without Zinc?

And they haven't gone to sleep yet. We gave them tranquilizers and eye blankets and they're still chatting away!

9 days isn't that long without food. Many people do it willingly and cite the joy they experience from it.

A funny write-up of a guy who went to a German clinic for a 9 day fast. They do have some liquids, but not much: https://www.esquire.com/uk/life/fitness-wellbeing/a20061679/food-fast-hunger-diary/

"is there nothing it can't do" is such a weird phrase.

And yes, there are plenty of things coffee can't do.

/not make me gag being one of them
//yes, I hate coffee

A human can go 40-90 days without food and survive. But 3 days without water... You die.

Survival Rule of Threes

You can make it about 3min without air or in icy water. 3 hours in extreme heat/cold. 3 days without potable water. 3 weeks without food.

Often longer on that last one since so many of us are kinda fat farks these days.

So: air, shelter/warmth, water, then food.

/that was a cannibalism joke.
//thank you.

Well that was a waste of time.  If one of them had consumed all 30 packets at once then they could have been out of there in minutes.

I've seen people live for over a week without water.

Now, they were unconscious nearly the entire time and died eventually, but still.

/you already covered food
//all those numbers seem to be more of a risk of death starts here more than you're dead here come to think of it

My recollection of Korean instant coffee is that the packets probably had 500 calories of sugar each. The instant coffee and sugar was layered, so they could separate out the sugar fairly easily.

2022-11-07 11:25:20 PM
This is why you never buy sugar-free anything.

2022-11-07 11:28:08 PM
That's less than 2 packets of coffee a day per person. Seattle pities the caffeine withdrawal symptoms they went through in the mine.

The story needs a down on his luck reporter who keeps them down longer so he can drag out the story

2022-11-07 11:31:38 PM
Those packets are mostly dry cream and sugar with some coffee powder for flavor.

Up north...

"Only 30 packets of coffee?"

Too much. More zinc.

Is there anything coffee can't do?

Give you tolerable breath.

Taste as good as it smells.

Make assholes stop cracking stupid "jokes" excusing themselves for being assholes when having caffeine withdrawal.

They'd probably have been better off if they hadn't eaten instant coffee actually.

Ketchuponsteak: They'd probably have been better off if they hadn't eaten instant coffee actually.

Yep, all that did was further dehydrate them, and probably gave them the runs, fact is, they would have easily survived 9 days on just water.
