Propaganda and money.
There is $881 million dollars invested into this mid-term and that money will be laundered through the media. That media will tell you that you need to vote lesser of two evils knowing you will not get anything because the other team wants to do so much worse for you.
Afterward ,more tax cuts and corporate hand-outs will flow upward to fund 2024's media payments.

As far as unions, the workers are on their own. It is a tough choice when your employer is threatening you and you know that no one in charge has your back.

2022-11-06 3:46:11 PM
"Why do people vote against their own interests?" is a stupid question. The asker presumes to know better what a person's interest is.

The LBJ quote above gets right to it. Some white people would rather be poor yet superior to minorities than be middle class and equal with minorities.

Narcissism.

Think about it. The railroad workers unions were fighting for some time off and the railroads refused.
The White House put pressure on the unions to accept only one day off. The members still voted it down.
It takes very brave people to fight your employer and the other people with power.

"The Democratic Party - and the progressive forces within it - have so much going for them. The GOP's economic vision has never been less popular with ordinary Americans, or more irrelevant to their material needs. The U.S. electorate is becoming less white, less racist, and less conservative with each passing year. Social conservatism has never had less appeal for American voters than it does today. The garish spectacle of the Trump-era Republican Party is turning the American suburbs - once a core part of the GOP coalition - purple and blue.

If the Democratic Party wasn't bleeding support from white working-class voters in its old labor strongholds, it would dominate our national politics. Understandably, Democratic partisans often blame their powerlessness on such voters - and the regressive racial views that led them out of Team Blue's tent. But as unions have declined across the Midwest, Democrats haven't just been losing white, working-class voters to revanchist Republicans - they've also been losing them to quiet evenings at home. The NBER study cited by McElwee found that right-to-work laws reduce voter turnout in presidential elections by 2 to 3 percent.

Further, the notion that grassroots organizing cannot make a non-woke white man prioritize his class interests over his racial resentments - and thus, that the Democratic Party's refusal to bolster union organizing was irrelevant to its failure to fend off Trump - is unsupportable. In 2008, labor invested a quarter-billion dollars into Barack Obama's election, allocating the bulk of those funds into burnishing the candidate's support among union voters in the Midwest. That year, unionized white men backed Obama by an 18 percent margin; while nonunionized ones went for John McCain by 16.

If right-to-work laws alone cost Democrats roughly 3.5 percent of a given state's vote share, how many votes has the party lost since 1978 by refusing to prioritize progressive labor reforms?

What kind of country would we live in today, if they hadn't?"

Americans really buy into the rugged individualism myth.  We don't like bosses, and a layer of union is another layer of boss.

In short, we cut our own noses to spite our faces.

A decades-long campaign to weaken our education system paired with most of traditional media being taken over by 24-7 propaganda has a large, detrimental impact on society.

When socialism isn't a balancing force vs. capitalism, and something a happy society employs elements of both of, but instead an evil force that must be stopped at all costs, you get late-stage capitalism, people starving in the streets, and everyone being one medical bill away from bankruptcy.

When science is something "the elites" use to oppress John Q. Idiot, instead of, ya know, literally the farking method by which we move civilization forward, then well... we DON'T move forward, and the rest of the world leaves us behind.

This isn't something you can fix with one bill or one campaign... it took DECADES to cause this damage and fundamentally restructure society, it's going to take a massive effort to fix it... while it still can be fixed. We can only go so far down this path before the nation simply collapses, and there's already a fairly powerful faction trying to make that happen ASAP.

Definitely ignorance.  Perhaps fear combined with the anxiety created by the news sources they rely upon for information.  But also would I would call a misplaced sense of priorities.  Many don't care how much they will be screwed economically as long as their social concerns are addressed.  Perhaps they are just resolved to a lousy economic life and thus accept it.  This is where ignorance comes into play as they refuse to realize that their lives could be better.

Having lived in Philadelphia for several decades, unions in the city don't have a great reputation. Between the massive corruption surrounding Johnny Doc - who is currently on trial with his conspirators - and the various conventions that stopped coming to the city because the unions at the convention hall were so hard to deal with, I cannot say I'm surprised if some Home Depot workers have negative views of unions (and certainly these controversies made running an anti-union campaign easier).

Because of retaliation and threats from management.  AKA Union busting.

Quiles has filed a complaint of unfair labor practices with the NRLB, alleging managers engaged in inappropriate surveillance and interrogation tactics against union supporters. Quiles has said managers followed him around the stores and tried to disrupt any conversations he tried to have with co-workers, even if it wasn't about the union.

They line up to buy F150's and then biatch about the price of gas.

Why?  Advertising.

They've been sold that this is what they want, what they need.

That it'll make them a man.  A person of consequence.

That anything else is weak, lame.

Why?  Because they've been told to do so.

Why?  Because it's what the rich and powerful, the 'liberal' (hahahaha) media want them to do.

This gets to the heart of the right to work laws. People, usually social conservatives, hated the idea of having to pay union dues that partially went to support political causes they didn't agree with.  They didn't want to pay the dues but still wanted the benefits of the union. Combined with campaigns saying people could negotiate better benefits individually, the perception that all unions are crooked, and the idea the labor unions are communist, the death of collective bargaining was all but inevitable.  Employers hate unions because it requires them to invest more in workers rather than give more compensation to executives.

Growing up after my parents divorced, I appreciated unions.  My dad was a member of the engineers union at Boeing while my stepdad was a member of the plumbers and pipe fitters union.  There were lean times for both some years.  My dad reluctantly had to cross the picket line once out of I want to say 5 strikes in his 38 years at the company. He could not afford to lose the health benefits for him, my stepmom, brother, and me.  Both my dad and stepdad have since become pensioners, still grateful for the protections their unions provided.

Divide and conquer.  Keep the poors at each others throat and they will never unite to become a political powerhouse.  Racism is one of the most profitable political plums you can engineer.  So long as there's money in the treasury to solve social problems, you can come up with ways to spend it.

From politics to unionization, why do American workers continue to vote against their own interests? Fear? Ignorance? Spite?

Brainwashing:  the result of 80 years of the GOP making "socialism" a four-letter word.

2022-11-06 7:31:28 PM
The problem is with the conception of what a union is. People think it's something about wages or benefits when it is not. The union is only successful if it can control the direction of the company. Can the union stop stock buy backs and keep management from piling on debt? Can the union prevent the company from getting into bed with dictators and destroying the environment?

The union should be an arm of management, and the most powerful veto arm at that. Not some grovelling child begging for a few more dollars an hour and an extra day of PTO.

There is no need for that if you control the company.

No, not socialism...raw unabated capitalism. The union forms and charges dues which are used to buy up stock in the company. The employees receive dividends and participate as an equal or outsized owner...gradually building more power as they become the largest shareholder.

Then wages, mergers, acquisitions, capital investments, board seats, CEO, and choosing to rape the planet and gouge customers all become their decision...and rightfully so under the terms of red blooded American capitalism.

You guys are overlooking racism.

If I go out to the Casey's in Baldwin City or Joplin and I say "Man, it would be nice if I could get everyone in my family covered under some kind of decent health insurance," I will get a "hell yeah". If I were to then say "And I'd love to get your family covered too," I'll get another.

But if I say "let's get everyone covered," then now I'm advocating for those lazy Mexicans and those welfare people in the city.
