Oh there is no way the Tories will give up power by calling for an election now, even if it would be the right thing to do.  Sunak has inherited a shiat sandwich from Truss of his own party's making because they wanted a libertarian paradise instead of playing nice with the rest of Europe.  The bloke is in way over his head and a former hedge fund manager at Goldman Sachs is one of the most unwanted choices for PM during a cost of living crisis, housing shortage, and utility issues, because he damn sure is going to do whatever it takes to line his own pockets.  King Charles dissolving Parliament is looking more and more practical.  If this matter isn't sorted by Remembrance Day, I actually think he will because the Tories will have forced his hand.  The same (should) go for Sunak being ousted.

The only concern of the Tories is hanging onto power until the next scheduled general election. That's it. Question is what a disgusting dog's mess this will become as one dope after another has a chance of filling the chalice with another rinse of digestive failure.

That's the thing that's always been bizarre as hell to me.  The vote for Brexit was not binding in any way, and could have been completely ignored.  And even at that, how many of the people voting to Leave wanted the "hard" Brexit of leaving without having agreements in place to do so?  At the very least, this process could have been slow-walked to try to minimize its damage to the British economy, but it was immediately hijacked by the loonies who wanted it done right away.

A problem in democracies in general these days is that not only do we not lack leaders willing to stand up and tell the electorate that they're being stupid, we have other leaders who actively encourage and abet that stupidity.

I wonder if the voters are more upset now, and with the prior PM, than they were with Boris because of those kinds of issues...

I mean the lot in government would sniff any ass at #10. But maybe not so much the average bloke.

Well, Tory leadership didn't want to sign a deal that would have prevented the massive influx of migrant workers from the rest of the EU; the deal every other nation in the EU signed.  This opt-out laid the groundwork for Farrage and UKIP to enact a racist agenda in the name of domestic prosperity.  Between Farrage and PM Cameron's promise to renegotiate the UK's terms with the EU, Brexit became an inevitability, especially since conservatives were counting on the racists to get the simple majority (51.9%) rather than a super majority and call for Brexit as "the will of the people and a mandate from the people".

2022-11-06 2:19:15 PM
Doesn't really matter what the British think about Brexit.  The more relevant thing is whether or not the UK will stay together or fragment, and it's the opinions of the Scots and the Northern Irish that matters more there.

And on this side of the Atlantic, we need to start rethinking our overall strategy & how our allies fit into that.

Our big three focuses should definitely remain the EU, Japan & SK, and Canada & Mexico.  That's core to our trade & influence, as well as giving us beachheads on the other side of the Atlantic and Pacific.

But after that... what should our focus be, and does the UK even play into it?

Personally I think our largest priority should be to expand our market, and believe that linking Central and South America to ourselves is the best way to do that.  That's a substantial population base, reachable by train, who need advanced goods & services.

As for the UK... they are friends, but we don't really need anything from them, so they aren't very important friends.   They are also are likely to get weaker & more fragmented, so will be even less relevant in the future.  Best to just let them be, probably.

What else can you expect from the Tories?  They didn't want to make the call themselves because they feared things would go 6s and 7s at the next election if it proved to be the wrong decision.  So the vote only ended in a simple majority, and they said "good enough" despite such a decision all but necessitating a super majority to be called "the will of the people".  Next thing you know, Farrage, Cameron, and May were going all ahead full to try and get it done.  Clearly wanted a softer Brexit, but most of the Tories wanted it done and over with.  So here we are 6 years and 4 PMs later dealing with a massive farkup that could have easily been avoided.

Just how "non-white" do you think Poles are?  Or are they non-white the way Irish were non-white (in the states) until about the 1950s.

Don't underestimate the impact of monied interests amplifying those voices. Democracies are ill prepared to deal with extreme wealth disparity.

Yes.  To a good chunk of the Brexiters, anyone not born in western Europe is obviously some sort of savage there to leech on the public teat while simultaneously taking all their jerbs.

Y'know, good old doublethink.

It's my contention (well, one of them) that Democracy is a reaction to extreme wealth disparity.  Then they bought their way in.

It's not simply monied interests. It's hostile governments trying to either bring down democracies, or at least weaken them so they won't interfere when Russia, China, Iran, or Saudi Arabia start their wars.

If Putin goes down and Russia is forced to retreat from the world stage, a huge destabilizing force will be neutralized, but they're not the only bad actors causing chaos for their own ends.
