"Private" data.

$10 says it's right there in the EULA you accepted when you downloaded the app. But you got to watch vapid people doing the latest challenge or dance moves, so it's totally worth it.

/that's what Xi said

TikTok takes your data and hands it to China.

That's what makes Facebook smarter.  Facebook takes you data and sells it to China.  TikTok is leaving money on the table.

Oh, you mean basic geo and demographic data that can already be mined from 10,000 other online entities, and used for marketing purposes?

We have well over 10 years of "your private data isn't private" stories, and people keep signing up for services that harvest their private data.  People don't care.

The only thing George Orwell got wrong was how willing people would be to be mass surveilled.

You know what those data people do? They look at your personal shiat, all of it.  Then they sell it.
So it's even worse than you imagined.
And you won't change a thing about your personal behavior.

You know Facebook and Twitter  track you here, right?  I've never had a Facebook page or a Twitter.  Why don't you ask Drew about it?  I'm sure he'll be perfectly forthcoming.
They advertise here. They have us.

What makes TikTok different from the rest of them is that they're (at least partially) owned by the Beijing government. At least on Facebook and Twitter, you can publicly announce that you know that something happened on 4 June 1989 without having to worry about your account being immediately and permanently suspended, nor would you get a knock on your door from hired goons reminding you that you have family in mainland China and you should go visit them because it would be a real shame if something happened to them.

Ever been verbally talking about something and then have that subject either show up in a google search suggest or even an ad? Freaky stuff.

So much can be gleaned even fetching an image.
