Many Fox viewers are "God fearing Christians", so blind belief in screeds of lies and hate, no matter how ridiculous, is what they are trained and conditioned to do

The smear -- the scare tactics, "Republicans are racist, sexist, misogynist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, now transphobic, they want dirty air and water, and they want to steal grandma and grandpa's Social Security and Medicare and they wanna defund the VA -- there's not one Republican supporting any of that. Just a lie.

I can name two right off the top without even thinking.

A lot of people could be asking if Sean Hannity has a trans daughter (born a son, but was worn dresses as a woman since 3rd grade). It could make people wonder why Hannity forces his younger son to wear women's clothes, makeup, and jewelry.

As such, the tools have a short work cycle and attention span.

When I go to a pizza restaurant to order a pizza, I go in with the hopes that they make me a pizza so god damn delicious it blows my mind.

Fox News viewers tune into Fox News because they want their beliefs validated that liberals and Democrats are Satan Incarnate and the Republicans are the Avengers who will save the world. Sean Hannity knows how to make them a pizza they will love and will keep coming back for more.

Fox News is not news. Like, literally, more than 2/3rds of their programming is opinion/entertainment.

Also, it's just like... Why was concern over liberal bias such a bugbear in the media when Fox News as an entity exists. It's only a news network founded by a former Nixon strategist with the explicit mission statement of ensuring that another watergate never happened again, and regularly swaps notes with republicans.

edmo: The working class will vote against its own interests again because it make democrats cry.

Apparently, according to CRT, the working class is very conflicted by it's friends-with-benefits relation to white supremacy tribalism.

It keeps the working class from truly organizing fully among it's members due to "they don't all look like us" exclusivity and they don't want to give up that sense of superiority.  You can't put a financial figure on that, but it's very very expensive.

Advertisement dollars are just the gravy for Fox News, especially for their public-facing brand toxic primetime programming. The real money for Fox News is in the per-subscriber kickback they get with satellite/cable providers for the honor of simply having Fox News on their dial, regardless of whether any given subscriber watches Fox News. Fox News' leverage is in their fanatical viewership who would certainly switch from any provider that decided that the Fox News kickback wasn't worth it.

You want to hit Fox News where it hurts? Push for legislation mandating providers offer channels à la carte. That way people would no longer unwittingly subsidize Fox News as a part of their cable/satellite plan if they didn't want to.

Its just like the Nigerian prince scams.... they are intentionally written badly so that no reasonable sensible person could ever give them any credence... thats because they want to remove those people from their victim pool as quickly as possible. If youve got enough sense to see that its obviously a scam, they want you to FO as quickly as possible so they can concentrate more on the ones that are going to send them money. The last thing they want to do is waste a bunch of time trying to convince skeptics.
You want to make the lies just stupid enough that only really stupid people will buy into them... because they make the best targets.

If the last few years have taught me anything it's that I've seriously underestimated how stupid the average person is capable of being. I always knew that people could be dumb. On a daily basis you run into one or two idiots on the road alone, goodness knows. But I always thought that it was relatively benign or, at worst, only a small sample size of the general populace. Surely the majority of people are reasonable, relatively intelligent adults that only have occasional slip-ups of perfectly understandable dumbness. "Oops, I forgot my keys. Silly me." Nothing to be worried about. Then Trump happened. Then Covid happened. That's when I realized that, holy fark, people can be absolute braindead morons. It's no wonder the whole "Nigerian Prince" scam somehow manages to keep fleecing rubes. Fox News has demonstrated you can create the most obviously fake over-the-top idiotic lies like, oh, I dunno, a major political candidate running a child-sex trafficking ring out of a pizza parlor and they'll farking BELIEVE IT.

2022-11-04 5:36:17 PM
*sigh* THEY'RE STUPID.

This isn't complicated. They're stupid. That stupid people believe stupid shiat isn't news.

Why do people continue to pretend this issue is complicated? Because it isn't. There are 330 million people in America. Some percentage of them is farking stupid. Whatever that percentage is, it's a percentage of 330 million people, so it's a not-small number of people.

Fox "News" derp "works" on people because they're farking idiots. As intended. Presenting dumb shiat to dummies is easier and quicker than producing something that takes time and effort and needs to be factchecked. Factchecking is wasted on these numpties.

2022-11-04 5:36:39 PM
Democrats don't understand that logic doesn't change any minds... logic just makes it easy to express express deep-rooted feelings ... the "logic" doesn't even have to make sense.

What Nigerian Prince scam?

I ask because I am currently working with the brother of the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari. His daughter was kidnapped and I sent him $10000 worth of iTunes gift card codes to help pay the ransom. I'm sure President Buhari will want to hear all about this Prince Scam you're talking about.

gunga galunga: Fox News viewers tune into Fox News because they want their beliefs validated that liberals and Democrats are Satan Incarnate and the Republicans are the Avengers who will save the world. Sean Hannity knows how to make them a pizza they will love and will keep coming back for more.

This. It's easy to write them off as drooling morons who can't tie their own shoes, but it's not the case. My mother is an educated woman, well read and well traveled. When she told me she was going to vote for Trump in 2016, and I saw the Q sticker on her car, I nearly fell over.

In the intervening years I have tried to understand how this has happened, and best I can tell it's a combination of a few things. 1.) This started happening when she retired, and it gave her a community to be part of (albeit an incredibly dumb one). 2.) Constant propaganda. Literally every hour she is awake she has on YouTube, or Fox news, or some other media source confirming the false reality she lives in. But to gunga's point above, it isn't just "consuming" news. It's reinforcing an identity and belief that they want to believe.

3.) The final thing is that at some point these people have to make a choice. The lies and falsities are simply too obvious. They need to choose to admit they were duped, or, they need to double down and just interpret the entire world as being against them and take it all as, essentially, an article of faith. Virtually all the people I know who started down the Trump rabbit hole do the latter. It's simply too damaging to their ego to admit they were suckered. It's much more fun to play the victim.

This is why it's pointless to argue with them. They aren't using rational thought, they aren't making decisions based on available information or even their own lying eyes. It's not just a sense of community (which is a large part of it), but also an entire identity. For Trump or Q or whomever to be wrong is not just a mistake, it's foundational to their perception of themselves. I'd also add that for him to be wrong, that would mean the awful things he did as president would make them awful people as well, which is a (true) but tough pill to swallow.

Anyways, I still have a positive relationship with my mother (the only MAGAT I've kept in my life) but there is a very explicit understanding that we don't talk politics. Every now and then she transgresses this, usually after some "explosive" new "evidence" of whatever has been published on Fox or wherever. It's 100% always misleading, incorrect, or evil (usually all 3), so my response is to loudly and immediately rebuke whatever nonsense she spouts. It's especially helpful if it is in public, because if she's not surrounded by other MAGATs she generally clams up quickly, as they can't stand to have their beliefs questioned in the open light.

"Like professional wrestling, the world of politics utilizes a Kayfabe to boost public support for policies and politicians. The public is propagandized on a constant basis by political leaders. Jacques Ellul (1965) noted that propaganda is ubiquitous, even when it is not intentionally employed, because it is quite functional. On the one hand, politicians cannot rely on the fickle nature of public opinion to guide their policies, but on the other hand, especially in western democracies, politicians are constrained in their policy making to those policies which appear to have public support....
Politics-by-Kayfabe is not crass cynicism: Like professional wrestling, the Kayfabe has become necessary for all interested participants. In wrestling, the Kayfabe provides a vehicle for fans to accept the spectacle as real. The business itself relies on the public buying into the story just as much as the public requires a story to buy into. The fans at a wrestling match are, in a sense, there to be taken. They want the drama, which so happens to be centered on men and women throwing each other around in the ring." From: Politics by Kafabe:
