Tanqueray: And he owns the Post. Conflicts galore.

Yeah.  He should buy the Chargers, build his own SoFi in San Diego and make us build him a private pier for his ridonkoyacht instead.

Fark the Commanders.

Jeez someone please save Herbert from Spanos already!

The Washington Amholes would be a better name than the Commanders.

I look forward to the Washington Amazons being the Thursday night game every week.

The sport that is fine with colleges protecting child abusers and the league that looks the other way at domestic abusers, sexual predators, grifting charity merchandise and hiding the fact that it's scrambling players brains into mush is going to care about a minor conflict of interest.

It'll happen.   There have been worse conflicts.   If he owns only one team in any sport, it's generally okay.  A real conflict would be a business partner of one team's owner buying another team in the same league.  That person could end up funnelling the best players from his team to the other.   This happened when the A's moved to Kansas City in the '50s, and the league allowed it.

Owning Thursday Night Football would not really help the Washington team.

I guess I don't really see how it would matter?

Prime Video owns the broadcast rights to Thursday Night Football, they want to show match-ups between good teams that people want to watch. The Commanders are decidedly...not that?

Only way the other owners will let him have a team is if he gets rid of every Amazon share and leaves the board.

The conflict is just too great to have a tv partner owning a team.

/a reminder that he doesn't run Amazon anymore but, minor detail

So is it going to be like when Ted Turner owned both the Atlanta Braves and TBS, and used TBS' national platform to broadcast Braves games all over the country all the time?

I grew up in a city (far from Atlanta) without an MLB team, and new peopl who grew up as Braves fans simply because they were always on TV.

That's how the Cubs became popular thanks to WGN.

The fact that Bezos owns one of the networks that air NFL games shouldn't be a problem. The conflict the NFL cares about is ownership of teams in different US markets, regardless of league. For instance, when Stan Kroenke was the minority owner of the Rams, he owned the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets. When Georgia Frontiere died, he bought the Rams outright, so he had to sell the Avalanche and the Nuggets. He chose to sell them to his son, keeping them in the family but no longer his. Bezos doesn't own a professional team in any other US market, so he should be fine.

And even if they were, playing on Thursdays is a big disadvantage the way the NFL currently sets it up.

The Commanders' issues begin and end with Snyder.  While you argue an infinite number of reasons they suck, the root cause of all those issues is Snyder.  They were a great team under Jack Kent Crook, and a great team before him.  There's little reason to believe Bezos would be a worse owner than Jack Kent Crook.  He might not have been much of a man (thus the name), but you couldn't complain that he didn't put together a quality product for the Redskin faithful.  Just don't expect anyone to be able to get the rot out quickly, but Bezos is certainly the man who has patience for such a fix (although why he'd buy a fixer upper instead of a good team is beyond me.  Probably for the lobbying opportunities).

And they were a great team to watch. The Superstation days kicked ass  Cubs (who were also fun then) , Doc Rivers/Spud Webb/Dominique/Kevin Willis Hawks, young MJ Bulls.

In Nor Cal, you'd get random weekdays of Cubs at 10:00, Giants or A's at 1:00, Bulls,Hawks,Braves or White Sox at 4:00, then a late game from Warriors/Kings or whatever baseball team was playing night games at home at 7:00.

I'm unfortunately a lifelong Washington Football fans. All of the Superbowls happened during very formative years for me. The last Decade and a half have turbo-sucked. I agree with everything that you're saying. I think that Bezos sucks, but he's nothing if not ruthlessly efficient and competent. He's like the Anti-Snyder that way.

I just am having a hard time understanding the actual practical impact of this "conflict of interest?" What's the "so what" of all of this? Kinda seems like people just don't like Bezos (I get it) and don't want him to own the team because they hate him (I also get it), so they're kind of looking for anything to throw out there (the part I don't get).

Honestly, now that I think about it, he should make Dale Earnhardt Jr. a partner in the team.  He's a huge Commanders fan, and probably would've kept DEI going if he'd have been able to wrestle control of it from his stepmom.

I feel like the name change would've gone down better if they'd used a better name than Commanders.  I've always been partial to The Senators after "The Replacements," I feel like that'd be a good name.

Or how about The Washington Monuments?

They were called the Sentinels.  And, yes, I agree that was a better name.  And a better logo.

/was a crowd extra in that movie, got Keanu's autograph during rain delay.
