The local Lowes opened 6 months after the local Home Depot and the Home Depot was closed within a year. I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between them.

I have no explanation why Menards hasn't shut Lowes down as well. They easily do 5 times the business.

Most HD employees currently spend most of their time gossiping in a corner or glued to their phones. If they strike, I don't think customers would notice a drop in service.


/Once watched the employee at the register text on their phone with intense concentration. All of the contractors in the line near the lumber section waited for about ten minutes, then shrugged and wheeled their carts full of stuff out past her without paying. The next month there was a receipt checker at the door.
//The receipt checkers have about the same work ethic, and I still watched contractors consistently walk out with stuff they did not pay for.

It's a chain store selling knickknacks. They're not going to have a staff full of skilled craftsmen.


Knickknacks? They sell lumber, hardware, and the like, most people don't decorate their shelves with plumbing fixtures, roofing nails, and paint supplies. I guess the lawn and garden section does have some lawn ornaments, not sure that counts as a knickknack though.

I can't speak to everyone else's experience, but the Home Depot and Lowes around here have a pretty knowledgeable staff. There's usually a couple in each area with actual experience in the department they work in.

Am I the only person who wants to browse in peace? No, I don't know where to find what I'm looking for, but there's value in wandering and seeing what there is to see. Instead I feel like I have to act like I know exactly what I'm doing at every moment, and rush in, rush out, to avoid being bombarded with ever-so-earnest "can I help you?"s.

Point of order: I voluntarily own a minivan, and can put a small stack of plywood/OSB in the back, which is a big reason why I got the minivan.

The project lumber at HD is utter crap, unless you get lucky.
Problem is, HD is just down the street from me, and Lowe's is a 45 min drive away...

Surprisingly enough, I don't regularly carry a saw with me. Also, if they'd have the capability and would do it for free, I'd totally want the paint department to paint the walls. Painting sucks.

Home Depot had their founding and growth phase where a good number of ground-level employees got great stock options as the company was expanding. It wasn't unusual for an early hire sales associate to work 15-20 years and then retired as a millionaire.

Of course, that's all done now and sales associates can be:
1. Retired people who know building trades from a career or other hands-on experience, or;
2. Teens who know nothing.

The people who know building trades are valuable employees and they would benefit from a union to secure them good wages and benefits.

The trailers just big enough to haul plywood, some lumber, a couch, or an appliance can be bought cheap on the used market and they are also small/light enough for vertical storage in a garage where you use a rope to a ceiling joist and winch it up to store it upright against a wall.

They have an app that tells you which aisle and bin number the item is located in. Self checkout, curbside pickup or delivery. Unless you need something cut to length or paint mixed you usually don't need an employee. I've scheduled appliance delivery and installs, flooring all on line.

Funny story, I was in a home depot looking for sex bolts. I asked the clerk for sex bolts and he dam near threw me out of the store for being some kind of pervert. Ignorance is funny when it happens to someone else,
I shop only on line now and find the item location in store unless I can wait to have it shipped. They don't have sex bolts btw. Lowes, Grainger, Amazon do but not the depot.

My local HD is pretty much as messed up as everyone's else's but I did score a 9.5' tall werewolf for $200 Sunday.

Most everything else I go to Ace. A little more expensive but they have employees that are helpful.

Yes, my parents' garage has room for a car and then there is like 5 feet of space on either side for storage. A small utility trailer (about 4x8 cargo area) can be backed up to a side wall, attach a rope to the hitch point, and use a block and tackle slung over a beam to winch it upright. It takes up minimal space that way instead of storing it outside somewhere, or taking up lots of space in the garage.

The trailer is actually light enough that it could probably be entirely hung from the ceiling just the same as some people store bikes, canoes, kayaks, etc. from the ceiling. It's a very light trailer.

I have a utility trailer that I hoisted up on my garage, which had 20 foot ceilings. Now I live in a house with a 3 car garage so the trailer is folded vertically off to the side.

It was the reverse of what Circuit City did when they cut sales staff pay (eliminated commissions) and then it was a mystery why their sales fell after the knowledgable, committed, slightly aggressive sales staff left that chain.
