First the voting rights act, then Abortion rights, then affirmative action.
I figure the next key items to fall will be (not necessarily in this order);
-the right for gays to get married (Obergefell)
-laws against discriminating against citizens based on gender/sex (Reed)
-the right of people to marry, irrespective of race (no interracial marriage) (Loving)
-state funded public defenders (legal representation is for the Rich) (Gideon)
-bans of pubic schools segregated by race or gender (Brown)
-automatic citizenship for being born on American soil (they will strip citizenship from people who can't prove a lineage back to certified US Citizens (US v Wong Kim)

I'm sure I missed some, but even with just those, the USA is starting to barely resemble the country I grew up in.

The Supreme Court is wholly illegitimate at this point.

Republicans packed it with nutjobs and partisan hacks. It's over.

I don't think that's the way it's going to go. Even in California or Illinois, two of the most liberal states, they have right-wingers - and they are just Itchingto literally make a federal case out of their inability to discriminate or treat others like second class citizens.

The GQP has come this far because they are willing to do things the Democrats won't - they will lie, cheat, and steal - and no sense of shame, tradition, honor, or fear of hypocrisy will stop them. They will gleefully rule against Democrats for doing a tenth of what the GQP does, and then double down on their behavior.

This will not stop until Democrats are willing to fight just as hard, and just as dirty.
It's Past time to pack the court. Do it for the sake of America, before there's no America left.

Fun Fact: Meritocracy is complete bull shiat. You'll just get a bunch of inbred honkies who's daddy went there.

Plus...not all schools get the same funding, despite that being illegal. Not to mention the lengths that schools will go to to ensure that their sportsball team can play.

Look at the flood of n-words, gay bashing & other bigotry since Musk took the locks of Twitter.

In no way is this country mature enough to not need some kind of way to ensure fair treatment of minorities in the public square.

SCOTUS is run by lying bigots who see but don't care that programs like affirmative action are sadly still necessary.

College is about learning new things and new people. A diverse student body makes for diverse experiences and better rounded people. Monocultures are a downward spiral and result in poor innovation and creative thoughts.

There are people who believe that racism was fixed by the civil rights movement. I mean....if you'd never been into a red lined community...I could see how you might come to that conclusion.

School money follows white children. If your school doesn't have white children...it won't have any money

If the schools have any brains at all they will do it by lottery.

Pre-qualify a large pool of applicants with min standards and then use a lotto ping pong ball machine to select the next freshmen class.

This will also be challenged in the courts by white people as they will see it as treating them exactly the same as minorities, and that's racist!

This would be better than the BS we will have without any affirmative action. At least the corruption would be out in the open and accounted for. Also, this would be a hit to the "prestige" colleges grant alumni.

The unintended consequence is that corporate HR will continue to strive for a diverse workforce on the grounds that it bolsters the bottom line and there isn't squat the government can do about it. Given that, they will start hiring people without the 4 year paper, provided that person can do the job. Hopefully this will unwind the university scam and real places of academic achievement can get back to their primary function of TEACHING instead of being vocational gatekeepers.

Before they started attacking "wokeism," they attacked intersectionality. The study of how one's circumstances can come from a lot of different factors that affect each other, like being Black in America leading to statistical educational and economic disadvantages.

There's a reason conservatives hate academia and actually looking into complex causes and influences of things.

I say this all the time, but if we have reached the top of Martin Luther King Jr.'s mountaintop with a society that is truly colorblind it will not nor should not be up to the intellectual heirs of Bull Connor who saw no problem with Jim Crow in the first place to determine whether we've arrived.

If you didn't see a problem then you don't get to say there's not a problem now.

Also - fark Clarence Thomas as a perpetual abomination towards the memory of a truly great African American Justice in Thurgood Marshall.  He has never been 1/100th of the man Marshall was.

Maybe somebody could answer this for me. If the Supremes decide to eliminate affirmative action at universities, is there anything stopping universities from continuing to implement these policies voluntarily?

2022-10-30 2:05:07 PM
For hundreds of years, these minority groups have been systematically discriminated against and are at - at no fault of their own - often at a disadvantage when applying to many schools if we do not permit this to be considered.
Sure, but Thomas is a supreme court justice and he's a Nig-  Negr - Colored? what do you mean I can't put that in an official opinion - S Alito probably shortly.

Which is a reason to address the fundamental issue, not to ignore it.

Throwing kids into college based on race doesn't do them any favors if they aren't prepared for it because you did nothing to ensure they had a decent high school education, or elementary before that, or just ensure they had adequate nutrition and healthcare while growing up.

If anything, I think we should have nearly everyone take some training in the law, especially rhetoric. Knowing how someone is trying to baffle you with bullshiat is helpful.

It'll also help dispel the notion that a lot of people have about how the law is what's right and wrong ethically.  And how the law can be manipulated to mean nearly anything if you use enough words, just like this SC used a witch prosecutor to overturn Roe.

I'm not sure how well society will fare once everyone realizes the law is essentially Calvinball, but at least we'll be honest about it.

Is progressive bad too, now?

I looked up one day and suddenly "liberal" was this horrible centrist thing. I'll shiat on Democrats for their tactics and priorities all day, but now both liberal and progressive are bad things too?

I'm a liberal. I'm a progressive. I'm a leftist. I don't know what the fark I'm supposed to be with all this bitter gatekeeping in the face of horrible shiat. What's the term for "I'm trying to not be shiatty to people, and believe that people should be protected from legal, social, and economic persecution for their identities, and that socialist concepts are generally good. What label should I wear that will make people who generally agree with me not be biatchy?
