In the best case, her crew blew up the drone boat before the drone boat blew up them. In the worst case, Makarov or Essen suffered the kind of waterline damage that quickly can sink a ship.

The author mixed up the best/worst cases.

Since my dad was in the USN serving in the Mediterranean in the 1960s, I have a certain sadness and reverence for any naval loss, whether enemy or friendly.

Having said that, I'm glad Ukraine scored some damage here, crippling the Black Sea fleet is critical to victory. It's Putin's fault these ships are lost.

From the Youtube coverage I've seen, one of the targets may have been a submarine docked in port. Unfortunately, it looks like that drone didn't achieve its aims. That would have been sweet, given that subs sre one of the platforms Russia has been using to launch the cruise missiles that have attacked western Ukraine.

Another Youtuber was claiming that Turkey (home of the Bayraktar drones) furnished the maritime drones used in this attack. Would be interesting if true.

There's something a little more  tragic about loss of life when it's a sunken ship or a downed plane.
When there is an external requirement for life that can be removed and then the crew being in imminent
peril of nature. Unlike ground troops, there is not running away from the danger, it's going from one
bad situation, to a a second bad situation instantly..At least that has been acknowledged in the Geneva
Conventions..Parachutists aren't to be targeted and sailors are supposed to be picked up (at convenience)
or at least a message sent to let the other side know they have people in the water..A courtesy code of
gentlemanly (or gentelady) chivalry exists, and that's at least something most of the world can agree upon.

Just now I'm on Psych S1E13 and it starts with a flashback where Shawn is playing Battleship with all his ships off the board. It's the Ukrainian angle. If you can't put out a fleet, start an onshore campaign with guided weapons. BattleToads with 15" cannons are almost a century out of date.

The economics of war have been shifting away from reliance on expensive weapons systems when the irregular and decentralized opposition in modern wars can destroy them with very inexpensive weapons.  It's hoping a $20 rifle or cheaper RPG does not hit the tens of millions of dollars plane.

Those subs are protected by these ships.
Picking apart these ships reduces their protection.

It also opens up Sevastopol to attacks directly.

The fact that they weren't battle ready... In a war and didn't have their CIWS ready to go is a failure of their navy more than a failure of ships.

Don't get me wrong, ships are giant floating targets and ours are super vulnerable to hypersonic weapons amongst others, but this is a complete failure in their command.

I've seen those CIWS that the USN has converted to land based protection systems (Phalanx C-RAM) take out man portable mortar rounds.

I'm talking about 82mm mortar rounds here.

And they're completely automatic.

American football is 711mm.

So that's a 3" round coming that's picked up by radar and knocked out of the sky.

Russia supposedly has that same capability.

If that is the case these shouldn't have even been a threat.

This is what happens when you have the majority of your ships staffed with conscripts on 1 year service contracts.  You don't have time to properly train them or even have them get comfortable with the systems or the ship before they're out.

What would be AWESOME is to have a track that goes around the ship with little domed R2D2 CWIS
that can position themselves to repel attacks as radar picks them up..Maybe some with gatling guns,
and some with small rockets depending on target...Bringing a new era to the term Gun-rail on ships..

The commander assigned to play Iran realized, obviously, that he had no chance of winning a conventional attack against the Nimitz, so he bum rushed it with suicide bomb boats. He won because the simulation found the Nimitz would've sank. That was something like 15 years ago. Everyone watching was stunned because the whole point was to demonstrate that our carrier groups were invincible, even around the Strait of Hormuz.

Yep, I hope the USN has already developed a plan to adapt our fleets to counter against USV attacks, this is a game changer for the big ships and every defense force worth their salt is acquiring them right now.

We're pretty terrible at lessons learned but sometimes we get a good general/flag officer in place to make meaningful changes. Guess we'll see.

The Black Sea Fleet was poised to attempt an amphibious landing around Odesa. Capturing the port would complete Russia's conquest of Ukraine's Black Sea coast and cut off the country from the sea, permanently strangling its economy.
