"How was I to know that Keanu would become the next Hollywood Dalai Lama? Jeez, just buy my book already!"

I can't believe Keanu is actually respected these days
I also can't believe someone read Chandler's book

If I didn't know a single thing about Matthew Perry -- and I'd be thrilled if I didn't -- I could take one fleeting look at the man's face and say, That right there is the poster child for repeated rehab stints and eternally precarious sobriety. Christamighty.

"I just chose a random name, my mistake."

And he just happened to randomly choose the same name twice, and in the same context: Expressing regret that Keanu Reeves isn't dead instead of somebody else, whether it River Phoenix or Chris Farley.

Random, my ass. Could you be any more full of shiat, Matt?

Here's a good idea, let's wish a guy that has had a resurgence in his career, starring in one of the most bankable franchises currently in Hollywood and by accounts of almost everyone who has ever met him a great human being dead. That's how you sell a book.

He's just jealous. At one point Perry was a star, and Keanu was a stoner punchline. Flashforward, and Perry is a burnout trying to drum up cash with gossip about his life, and Keanu is a Mega Star.

Matthew Perry had an ensemble series and was supporting cast in *ONE* somewhat funny film starring Bruce Willis at his peak (also starring a very naked Amanda Peet, a smokin hot Natasha Hentsridge, and full-on-Milf Rosanna Arquette). That's his career in a nutshell. He go lucky with the mediocre sitcom that he gets to live in drugged-out comfort for the rest of his miserable life. He should STFU about his betters.

Yeah, I am sure that over $20 million a year in Friends residuals is really putting a hurt on all the millions he's already earned and he totes needs to sell the book

Perry's book offers no further clarification on why Reeves' name was mentioned.

Because Matthew Perry thought that using Keanu Reeves, someone whom Perry apparently thinks failed upwards and became accidentally successful, would work for comedic effect. "Man, we lost real artists but the 'Bill and Ted' guy's still here! It ain't fair!"

Matthew Perry can fark off.

We're three decades down the road. Things change. Keanu Reeves commands respect not just because of his growth as an actor, but because of what he does, quietly, off-screen as well. Matthew Perry commands contempt because he hasn't grown as an actor, but continues to surf three-decade-old popularity while disparaging those who've moved beyond him.

Fark Matthew Perry.

I wasn't going to buy his book before, but now I'm not gonna buy it even harder.

Last thread had an MP apologist saying they were old remarks from long before Keanu's rise to the A list, but another Farker pointed out the second reference is from at least 2008.

So yes, Perry is indeed a tool who took unwarranted shots at a far more beloved and popular celebrity.  A status that, unlike many others, all evidence points to Keanu actually deserving.

I did some Googling and found out that Reeves lost a friend in River Phoenix also, so I am even more
perplexed by his quotes.

I guess misplaced survivors grief of the "why not me"? self pitying, and that now in his middle age the

Maybe Perry knew them both and just didn't like Keanu Reeves?

Whatever the reason, his editor should have known to take it out. It would have worked as a joke back in the 90's. It doesn't now.

$20 million a year in residuals seems...optimistic. Even for Friends. No way he's getting anything near that in mailbox money.

I've noticed some of those comments too.  I think people tend to forget just how much money the whole group continues to make from that show.  That's why David Schwimmer can go do regional theater productions with his old college troupe and pretty much ignore the business whenever he wants.

It's a shame about Perry or anyone who struggles that much with addiction.  When he was functioning properly he was genuinely funny and showed a knack for drama too.  Whatever anyone thinks of Friends it's something to see that people who were born either late in its run or after it ended have memorized that character's lines.  That's not bad.

Perry could just keep the focus there and be fine, but no, he has to prove how much of an obnoxious asshole that a recovering addict can be. That's not how to gain sympathy for your problems, pal.

My thought as well. This right here is the reason editors draw a paycheck.  Writers pour out unfiltered diarrhea.  Whomever was the editor, this is on them.

I assume it was more for the relevancy than the money. He wanted people talking about him again.

Mission accomplished.

I think they can add "checking for gratuitous, mean-spirited comments wishing a beloved celebrity was dead" to their list of job duties.

Well, SOMEBODY clearly dropped the ball here. Lamenting that Keanu Reeves hasn't dropped dead may not be libelous, but it is now the source of negative publicity that could potentially have a severe impact on sales.

Or they thought trainwreck value would move five copies of a memoir by Freinds Guy that otherwise might move zero.

I am being picayune. It's just silly when people mention what editors do on Fark.
