It's all about Babe Ruth's piano...

Duquette will continue to be paid through Jan. 26, 2004, Lucchino said.

man, i wish i had a job where I got fired and they kept paying me for 3 years!
2002-02-28 01:39:51 PM
Everybody now, altogether!

"Ding dong, the witch is dead..."
2002-02-28 01:40:35 PM
Ding dong, the duke is gone!

It's not so much that the Sox win the series, it's just as good if the Yankees lose.

Watching the Yankees get pasted 15-4, and then losing the series the next day was an early Christmas present for Boston.
2002-02-28 01:41:18 PM
Yeah, Veek2o, that was pretty sweet how he was able to scam a 4-year contract extension last year while the team was up for sale, huh?

There is a god and he loves me very much. Thank you answering my prayers, Jeebus.

I'm going to have to dust off my old anti Michael Dukakis bumber stickers. "The Duke Makes Me Puke". Yankees suck.
2002-02-28 01:44:21 PM
"Well, I've never been to Greenland and I've never been to Denver and I've never buried treasure in St. Louie or St. Pawl. And I've never been to Moscow and I've never been to Tampa and I've never been to Bawston in the fawll!"

Sorry... obscure.

hey, Ouro, I made it into that basketball game Tuesday night!

New GM prospect: Bill Buckner?

Here's to another 83 years of failure! Huzzah!
2002-02-28 01:48:27 PM
DrBenway: much did it set you back? I watched on TV as we fired on all cylinders while Tech watched helplessly.
2002-02-28 01:49:35 PM
man, i wish i had a job where I got fired and they kept paying me for 3 years!

That's 2 years, although it's irrelevant. Either way it's stupid.
2002-02-28 01:50:31 PM
$35 for a $25 seat, 20th row on the floor behind the Tech bench. I held out until right about tip-off time when the prices started dropping...

Not that obscure Mrdark!
Your secret is out: you have ... kids!
"Oh we're the pirates, who don't do anything,
We just stay here, and hang around
If you ask us, to do anything
We just tell you.... We don't do anything!"
Heh heh. Oh, gotta keep this on thread.
Death to the Yankees!
2002-02-28 01:50:58 PM
Needs an "obivous" tag, though "cool" certainly fits. Hope that guy never works in baseball again, but some franchise that wants to bloat its payroll, create discord between players and management, between players themselves, alienate fans and still not win the division will snap him up.
2002-02-28 01:51:43 PM
f sports
2002-02-28 01:51:49 PM
Bah, how do you know they won't win? Well, besides overwhelming odds to the contrary, a team that's still not fully together from last season's debacle, disgruntled players left and right....

We Red Sox fans have the practice of saying "This is the year!" every year. It most likely won't be, but hey, who cares? Baseball and any other sport's about living vicariously through your favorite athletes to compensate for the mundanity of your everyday life. The fact that for the most part the Sox try their damnedest every year means more to me than any "World" championship.
2002-02-28 01:52:09 PM
They waited until NOW to do this!?
2002-02-28 01:52:42 PM
"Oil Can" Boyd for GM...
2002-02-28 01:54:00 PM
Sox fans beware. Remember that Doug Melvin is still on the loose. You could end up in the same sad state as those of us who pull for the "Little Red-Shoed Rangers".
2002-02-28 01:54:06 PM
Nabb1: I don't know, I hear they need someone to clean the toilet in Montreal...
2002-02-28 01:56:03 PM
it's a happy happy day in red sox nation.

yankees suck.. giambi sucks.. and jeter is gay.
2002-02-28 01:56:08 PM
Clean toilets in Montreal? Who's been using them to make them dirty? Youpi?
2002-02-28 01:56:19 PM
Maybe the Red Sox can have a decent year. I still hate them, but quite a bit less than the Yankees. Let's see, they manage to get rid of Carl Everett, they get rid of Duquette, so far both Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra are healthy...all huge improvements.
2002-02-28 01:59:24 PM
Pretty stupid to fire him now. This is basically Duquette's team, even when the new GM arrives. Should of fired him before he made any off season signings.
2002-02-28 01:59:51 PM
toilet singular. and it's only a part-time job. in the visitors' clubhouse.
2002-02-28 02:03:32 PM
Oh yeah!!!!!!

And there was much rejoicing. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy
2002-02-28 02:11:28 PM
For those living under a rock for the past 6 months, the Sox were in the middle of selling the team. Duquette was in bed with the previous owner, Harrington, who wasn't going to fire him. The sale was finalized yesterday and the new owners wasted no time giving Duke the axe. It's a happy day. Yankees still suck and Jeter still takes it.
2002-02-28 02:11:57 PM
Did I mention that the Yankees suck, and Jeter is a fancy-boy dandy?

Go Sox!

Good riddance to the Duke!
2002-02-28 02:13:00 PM
Honestly, you have to be a non-Boston fan to ignore the fact that Duquette has mismanaged this team ever since he was appointed GM.
2002-02-28 02:50:36 PM
Hey, even non-Boston fans can see that he's been driving them into the ground. He seems obsessed with collecting aging former stars (at least in their own mind) for way too much money. Let's see, we have five outfielders who are ok, get paid like they're great, and all think they deserve to be starters. Jimy Williams was doing his best to hold things together last year, and I think the record before and after his firing speaks for itself.

Duquette thought he could shift the blame to Williams, well it didn't work. It just showed everyone in baseball exactly who was keeping them down.
2002-02-28 02:51:26 PM
they never had a chance anyway...

they are wicked awful!
2002-02-28 03:01:06 PM
Red Sox ? Is that the soccer team that plays in Foxboro when THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION PATRIOTS are in the off season ?

Please, with that Super Bowl win, I couln't care less if the Red Sox ever win the World Series. Maybe I'll see a game this year at Fenway. Or maybe I'll stand in line to buy some football tickets.

Go go Nanette !!
2002-02-28 03:10:31 PM
All they need now are four more clones of Pedro Martinez, and they have a good shot at a .500 record. ;)
2002-02-28 03:21:56 PM
I like the Sox and thought this was great news for them, until I saw who's replacing him -- Mike Port. How many rings have his teams won? Here's a hint -- when the Angels played the Sox in the '86 ALCS, the Angels looked like the team that'd been cursed for a century. That was his team.
2002-02-28 03:26:50 PM
The Boston Red Sox decades of excuses and accusatory finger pointing.Gotta love it.

Go Yankees!!!
2002-02-28 03:39:05 PM
Boston Surrenders!
2002-02-28 03:48:45 PM
my comment here is important
2002-02-28 04:07:28 PM
15-4 loss in the series, loss of said series to a second-tier team, yep, Yankees suck.

Go Sox!
2002-02-28 04:18:11 PM
The Red Sox will win a world series in my lifetime. DO YOU HEAR ME!!! DAMN YOU!!! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!
2002-02-28 04:39:05 PM
Wait til next year!
2002-02-28 05:04:21 PM
Duke was the greatest GM ever - just ask Fatboy Clemens, Mike Stanley and Mo Vaughn.
2002-02-28 05:26:30 PM

4 W.S. in six years not too shabby.
Lets see the math on the BoSox '76 choke,'78 Bucky Dent,'86 huge choke.Yep the record speaks for itself.

Boston Sucks
2002-02-28 07:08:13 PM
Memo to Boston fans:
Envy really is a terrible thing. You folks need to get over the fact that you'll always finish behind the Yankees, and that you'll never win the World Series again. Ever. Why don't you try talking to some fans who've come to grips with their essential suckitude, like Baltimore Oriole fans? It'd do you worlds of good, and you and the O's fans could commiserate about the unfairness of it all, etc.

Go Yankees.
2002-02-28 07:51:09 PM
I dunno, I think for anti-Yankee fans that whole Rivera-blowing-the-save thing in the 9th of G7 last year was as much fun as anti-Sox fans probably had watching Buckner in '86 or Dent in '78. Actually, more fun, since the Yankees seem to think winning the World Series has become their entitlement (especially last fall). At least the Sox always expect the horrible, but the Yankees probably never saw that coming, and in the long list of post-season excruciating heartbreaks, that's the freshest.

Thank you again, Luis Gonzales.
2002-02-28 08:26:07 PM
heh, guess I can't add.

But I say, Bill Buckner for GM!
2002-02-28 10:36:21 PM
Dale_Gribble: Are you saying Dukette was dork smuggler? That he putted from the rough?
