There is a fair bit of Harper's FIPA trade deal with China that is publicly secret, I'd bet a dollar there is a "no trade deal with Taiwan" clause in there.

Only 3 nations on Earth have semiconductor foundries. Taiwan and South Korea.

You have to have trade with at least one of them, or you don't get to produce modern technology. And Taiwan produces the most semiconductors between the 2 of them.

Canada's can still produce maple syrup, psychotic geese, and crappy whiskey without this partnership though.

Singapore, Japan and US have semiconductor foundries as well.  Israel also some some capability as well.

China is listed too but that may have been torpedoed.

Welp... that, to those not familiar with Canuckerland politics, would be a massive political football filled with bees that spit dogs out of their mouths.

Let's see how(ei?) this plays out.

Well, I'm going to go on how I was raised and assume that it applies equally to all Canadians:

China's bad, but we like the cheap electronics and until it made our homes too expensive, loved the real estate speculation.

Taiwan's good, and we pretty much are ignorant of the politics which make it a bit less black-and-white.

Beyond that... We're Canada.  We don't have the economy to hurt China, and neither of us can assault the other militarily.  Mostly it's occasional political posturing because that's the limit of our capabilities.

They're China, and have apparently no understanding that Canada will act on principles and according to the law and not blunt political blackmail.

I think that covers it.

Screw China.

We should buy all the microchips and make all the computers. They can have the Island and steal the Pacific Ocean, but we should Bogart the chips and I don't mean Ketchup. Build a wall out of bricked cellphones and computers.
